Dumb question, but is there anything else hitting install does other than letting everyone know how popular a hack is?

if you click INSTALL the author can contact you when new updates are available

An ALT ATTRIBUTE will not help ... you are assuming that everyone understands the ALT ATTRIBUTE. It is best not to make assumptions like this.

It will help the people who take the couple of seconds to wait for alt text to appear.

I suppose if you think clicking a button is going to magically install a few hundred lines of code and alter your database, there's not really much hope to begin with.
