Can't you just make a NFS mount to the other server. If the network between the 2 servers is fast enough, that might be the easiest solution.

Could you use two servers as the web front end with the .php files and attachments mirrored using rsync and a single DB server that both hosts point to and load balance using round robin DNS?

maybe session data would be a problem at that point ....
