No moralising about whether copying music is right or wrong. These digital files of music released are out there, we can get them free, and it won't be stopped. It's not much use defining something as wrong, because it doesn't actually HURT anyone. Not the studios, not the musicians, not anyone.

Both are illegal and if you are involded in ethor or both you should be aware of that. I don't care how you twist it and try to make it 'right' by downloading it you are commiting a crime.

Now that said, everyone dose do something thats not considered 'legal' in one form or anthor. So ill leave it at this, download all you want, but be prepaired to pay the price if your ever caught ;)

Millons of people are arrested and put in jail every year for taking 'illegal drugs' and causing no harm to anyone but themselves. What about them?

Acully your point is moot, because it dose hurt the studio, the muscians, and the asorted people that distrobute and re-sell their product. These people have invested money in their work and by downloading it for free you steal from their end profit.

I never said it wasn't illegal.

Also, you make them money when you go to their concerts, not when you buy their CDs. Everyone knows that.

(By the way, I don't download music, I don't pirate software, I don't pirate movies, ... I only said I've listened to a few songs a year that a friend or whatever has sent me over AIM with no guilt.)

But it does hurt everyone else who did produce the cds :)

Serious why do u have these debates because theres always gonna be them whos for it and them who`s against it and no amount of words in any post is gonna change anyones minds.
Ive downloaded hundreds of songs off Napster when it was in its Infancy - why - cause i was to lazy to rip the cds i had to mp3.
My collection of orginal CDs mounts to about 480 and most of these have been brought over the last few yrs.Im now converted a lot of them to mp3s on me drive (well the best ones anyway) cause i hate having to get up to put a cd in where i can just go to a music folder and play away to my heart content :)

You mean perhaps a couple of producers? The Artist? And then the producton equipment? And then, of course the machines that are used to output millions of CDs and cases with a couple of workers supervising the machinery? ;) If you think about it it's just a few people sat on their ass getting rich.

It really just comes down to your morals and what you believe. Personally, I'm sure that I've downloaded less than 10 songs illegally in my life, if even that many, and it's been a few years since I've downloaded anything. If I like a CD/DVD, I'll go out and buy it just because I want to help support the people that made it possible. I can understand someone downloading a CD to make sure that they like it before purchasing it, but keeping the CD, continuing to listen to it, and never buying it is morally wrong as far as I'm concerned.

This is actually legal. You can make backups (what an MP3 is considered legally) of any music you purchase a license to. If you have a CD and download an MP3 of a song on that CD from an external source, this would also be considered legal.

My wife does the same thing as you do. First thing she does when she brings a new CD home is rip it to her PC and eventually deletes the songs she doesn't like. She then copies those MP3s unto her Creative Zen player and the original get put away for safe keeping. We also are purchasing more and mroe single songs off of services like the new Napster. So much that our music purchases have increased 10 fold over the last year.
