I'm hoping to get off my filthy modem too.. just need to do some parent persuading. :D

Uploading takes a year on a modem, it really is that bad. >_<

DSL rules, I remember getting on my friends 56k after being on my DSL and having it seem like forever to load something. :p

I went from 56k to cable.... Never going back. :)

My father still has 56k, that's hard if you have to repair his PC and try to download upgrades/drivers....

Downloading updates is the number one reason to get off lowband imo, its a pain to do it on a modem. I remember when my brother got his comp and I had to spend about 3 days downloading all the updates for windows xp home edition.

I guess the number 2 reason to get off lowband is the fact that I can update a vbulletin via ftp in under a hour. I re-hack the files from scratch every update, so that means updating all the php, client script, etc back up to the server. That can take a good while depending on what my connection is doing at the time. ;)

An hour?!

Uploading a complete copy of my site (images and all) takes under 15 minutes.

Uploading a database backup takes another 5, so I can be running after a failure in under half an hour.

Too right! I spent a good half a day getting all my windows updates when I first started using my new comp with WinXP. Pain in the butt, that's for sure. Now it's not so bad, as you only get small updates at a time.

56k is really that slow, better believe it. ;) Takes me just about the same time, vB3 has more files and such, so it's not as fast as it was for vB2.

well, i still don't upload images while upgrading, files are enough ^^

especially the styles/language takes some time, especially if you would have to use a 56k ^^

I always upload the latest .xml, .php, and anything else that could hender the preformance of the forum after the upgrade.

Even with just that it can take alot of time for my modem to get them uploaded via ftp. Norm speeds for me are right around 1.5k a second both ways.

you should upload the xml fies at first, as they don't hurt while uploading.

once the php files are uploaded, then you come to the bottleneck of the upgrade ;)
