one thing I've noticed is waaayyy too many forums on a new board. This is very discouraging, and often daunting.

My suggestion is to consolidate your forums. basically one forum for each category.

my board started with 2 forums- General Discussion, and Stories. as we grew, and demand for a specific forum grew, then I open new ones.

this is the best advice I can give to anyone.
