This is what I have tried, this site mentions a hack is required?

I cant sign up as the image verification isn't shown to me

have you applied these settings to your forums? (note its probably easier to use the terms category-forum-sub-forum and forget about the term child)

The first two options should be set to yes

I think the hack you mentioned is referring to listing them one after another rather than next to each other as mine are on here

I've fixed it, I needed to change one of the Sub Forum Depth options to 2 from 1- Such a simple change :).
