Images cached on your hard drive which may never be used again aren't in the same league as images republished on your site for others to see (and from which you might be making a profit). Do try that argument in court and let me know how it goes.

Your intentions are to auto copy images from third party sites without any check on copyright... and then republish them.

My site is non-profit, it neither takes, nor makes, any money. It is a group of enthusiasts who take pictures of hills and ponds whilst out rambling. I am hoping to build up a nice library over the years of some of the most beautiful and scenic parts of the UK which I don't want spoiled by bandwidth restrictions, people moving folders, people deleting files etc etc etc

If this is a forum that wishes to rubbish everybody's ideas without really considering the concept and the reasoning I think this may be my last post :(
