If there is any method by which you can identify the old, uldeleted spam posts and then delete them, then it will result in better ranking on Google.

Having dofollow spam links on your site can result in penalties from Google and search engines.

But yes, I have noted significant decline in vB3 related mods and discussions. I think its much better with vB4.

Yes activities have slowed down at both locations. I'm on at either location a lot and see very little new posting and what is posted is getting little to no response.
