Excerpt
...I know what you mean, "If you give other people, they would give you". I actually observed that, it doesn't even work like that. When you are welknown in OG forums, then people give you karma, even for the smallest buds or simple jokes. And a lot of new users try to make wellknown users like them, to get some karma. I give everytime karma when I like something.

Check out for example this thread ... I uploaded 17 pictures in that thread, I think the pictures look good. The thread has been viewed +1500 times , let's say 200 people viewed 7 times (I think more ppl less times viewed), and from those ppl just 6 of them responded, and 2 of them gave karma. If I would be all about karma, 2 karmas and 6 responses wouldn't be enough for 17 pictures. Ppl just want to look at the pictures, and even if they enjoy or like them they don't respond, this is what I don't understand.

Compare an unknown user's thread (including nice pictures) with a wellknown user's. There is a huge difference. The whole karma thing has nothing to do with that what you grow, it has smthing to do with popularity. Maybe in my case the problem is my broken English, I saw some of the wellknown users complaining about ppl's wrong spelling and stuff, which I find not o.k to discuss about.

It looks like you haven't given enough in 2 years to get some. Here is some (I guess just one) karma for you.
You gave and received, I know how it works now ..."

General Question for all:
How do you compare the best "karma" systems out there to slashdot's points & filtration system?

http://slashdot.org/faq/com-mod.shtml#cm600

Do those of you who want some kind of "karma" system also want the filtration that enables you to say, "show me only threads/posts that have a minimum threshold of xx points" ?? -- or do you mostly just care about the raw karma points themselves, and how they differentiate various users from one another?

MrLister 08-31-2001 11:09 PM

how much are you willing to pay?

caserini 08-31-2001 11:30 PM

For me, it's a bidding war...

Name your price...

I agree.

So, "TheFlow", what's your definition of the Karma hack? How would you like it to work?

I told you I had most of it, and it would take me a week "rush" to finish. (if I was lucky) Personally, I don't like releasing my own work, selfish as it may seem. Sell it to a few people sure, but not publicly release. This will never be a lockdown hack, arg, I wish people would forget that hack. joecrow, maybe you should stick to pokemon, and not fake cc until you grow up a little.

PS- please don't refer to my private ICQ conversations unless I say its okay, for that your conversation is also publicly known.

For my purposes, the cuteness of karma points is irrelevant to me. What I want is in many ways opposite of what I have now read more closely on overgrow.com -- where they state it is less about the content of any given post and more about a "niceness" and reciprocation style of the user, in general. (That's oversimplifying it).

I'm much more interested in a tool that enables users to rate the usefullness (to them) of the content of the posts, independent of whether you like anything about the author himself/herself. Obvious restrictions against multiple voting, voting for self, etc.

Formulas, thresholds etc for tabulating & displaying of rating results need to have a relevance beyond simply "if there are 10 votes, display results as an average". I'm not a coder so I cannot define those requirements.

My real intent is to enable filtration in three principal ways:

(1) Browse Mode: whatever graphical display system is chosen to communicate ratings (stars are good), users can scan thread lists, member lists, search return lists, etc and easily see these displays, much like exists already for thread ratings.

(2) Targeted filtration: Posters who have negative ratings are good candidates for "ignore" lists

(3) Filtered browse: "show me only posts/threads that have a minimum threshold of x rating"

Edit: Oh yes, I want to be able to filter out annoying Guests, not just Registered users. Thus, the unreliable IP checking... But maybe someone knows a way of handling this.

Let me try again: how does selling work? is vB okay with this? Is this something that has to be done on the sly, as private transaction? Or do hacks like this sometimes get sold, legitimately, as something kind of like a 3rd-party plug-in? (I understand hacks are not plug & play auto-installed. I'm asking is vB cool with 3rd party sales of hacks, knowing already that anyone who installs any hack is ineligible for vB support of their licensed software? Any thoughts on this?
