To repair a table you can use the following query replacing table with the table name:

Code:

REPAIR TABLE table

The problem is caused by wrong permissions for temp directory.
Unless you have root access and permission to the server, you can not fix this.

Would upgrading to a newer version of vBulletin fix this issue or would that further complicate it without fixing the current issue first?

Unless you have root access and permission to the server, you can not fix this.
You must contact your host.
