it takes about 3 months for the baby to be aware of his/her arms and hands... before that, pointless...

and i can tell it's quite expanded in the world... i manage 4 parenting websites, and each place have discussions about child development before 1st year... some are realllllly strange.. lol

not my work... anyway, i'm building one right now, for resources and community... i hate most of the parenting forums i visit, so i build that first one by myself... in french/english/spanish etc... ;)

back to topic, what i like about Babies signs is that the babies have the ability to communicate faster by sign, because they try to manipulate their hands faster than their vocal folds... my 1 year old Rafaelle is already aquinted to discuss with people by sign, and right now she try to be vocal... loudly.. lol

I took ASL1 and ASL 2 in college. I used the basic ones with my kids and it helps and works a lot. I never imagined I'd need it for my nephew that I had every day till I moved (i miss him a lot) He was born with ONH and has less then 10% vision in one eye and less the 2% in the other. His blindness caused great speech delay and with sign language we were able to teach him to communicate. With out it he would have had 0 communication. Hes 3 now and starting to talk a little more. Enough so that he doesn't rely on his signs so much. Hes so used to signing though that he often uses both. hehe So even though hes not hard of hearing or deaf, he wouldn't have been able to communicate without it.

I cant say enough good things about it. Its a great parenting tool for all parents. They cry a lot less when they can communicate what they are not able to speak too.

Oooh and none of my kids had issues with signing over speech as they were able to talk. There is a natural switch for hearing children. They will use the speech over the signs when they are able too.

Sounds pretty crazy must be some smart babies to learn that!
