I have banned 25 people in 48 hours all spammers but the bad thing is they are using @gmail

Davey-UK 10-11-2008 11:47 AM

I have also had this, but i added a simple human verification question for registration, and all has been well since.
Fingers crossed.

You know what really annoys me, even if you visited one of the sites they advertise, would you ever buy from them........?

I have the human verification question for registration and I am getting more today than I have in 2 months....they all are using @gmail and I of course can't ban that email 40% of my members have that.

public_html/gsarcade/avatars/a5d28f71da.gif: HG-PHPSHELL.Encoded.Fragment.AA.UNOFFICIAL

and removed them. Since then it's been smooth sailing. So do whatever you have to do to prevent them from registering.

The problem is that quite a few countries are a safe haven for spammers and porn merchants, say for example your site is based in the uk or usa, do you really expect an influx of new members people from a spam prone country giving your site great input??

i doubt it, you can ban the emails and also block the whole country IP either in your admin cp or even if your clever from your cpanel if you have that with your hosting.

To find an entire country IP block try a site like http://www.ipdeny.com/ipblocks/ you can chose whole countries to ban and hopefully the problem with stop.

Don't forget to search the Mod forum for the latest Spam hacks and install them as well, every little helps, as they say.

It wouldn't be fair to put all the blame on Russia, as there are some decent VBulletin sites in the former CCCP, but this will suprise you

According to Spamhaus, a leading authority on making the internet safer, the country with the worst record for spammers is in fact :eek::eek: take a look for yourself http://www.spamhaus.org/statistics/countries.lasso

came as a bit of a shock to me also :erm:

Anyway, you can also report these spammers, don't forget, take a look at the worlds 10 most prolific spammers http://www.spamhaus.org/statistics/spammers.lasso

Take care

I used to get those .ru members, all spammers. i had to install a hack that prevented members with less than 5 posts from posting url's. no more spam. also used a multiple registration prevention hack.;)

Okay, I have a smiliar issue. I need to know if I have made the board COMPLETELY private, only approved registered posters can see anything in any thread, how is it possible that we watched one with a Japan proxy digging through one of our forums? Is it possible to gain entry through a patch?

Also, how safe is it to add Smiliey Central to our board?

Thanks in advance. You guys are the best!

What hack would that be? I was getting hammered by spammers so bad that I had to switch my forum to IBP temporarily but I'm about to switch back sometime this week when I have the time for it.
