i only ask one question at registration

can you spell? type the first letter of the word jack

bots get confused about this, so far no more spambots and thats about 2 months now

I run a custom hacked mix of the following:

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=131852
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=135094
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=124828
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=131568

I also add a random custom profile field - my own special twist

Then I use this to make it quick and easy to remove the spammers!

Just NEVER delete the spambot, simply ban them! This way they can not come back and reregister later!

I had one dedicated spammer sit on my site for quiet a whiel trying to get on and you could tell it was a human as the bots just kept getting smarter. So, I changed all the no spam questions and changed the custom profile fields. They decided to go spam someone else's site instead.

With the IP Proxy tool, I created a group where their new posts are moderated as opposed to banning and I check new members against a huge list of proxy IPs. It is likely overkill but my community is largely older people and I can't have the latest britney or parris upskirt showing up as it offends my users.

I run a required user profile field that has a default value that is completely different then the one required (in addition to recaptcha). I then have a Regular Expression set to check the field for a correct entry. Stops the auto bots dead in their tracks...

Using the NoSpam! mod should help prevent this. I wouldn't advise using the default vBulletin one as it is much easier exploited.
