Same story here, some bots are on the attack, getting huge amount of registrations.

Looking into it now.

Guys, I did some research.

I found that spammers use this tool

http://www.zdnetasia.com/downloads/p...265381s,00.htm

It's free to try, at least we can learn the tool so we can defeat it.

look at where some of these bots/spammers are

/register.php?do=addmember&do=addmember

regardless of the spam that is resulting from these what the underlying problem is that the Vbulletin Captcha has been broken and we need a fix.

Is there a way to enable two human verification options at once.

i would like to have captcha and then question and answer not just either.

This is what I do.

Change the setting "Registered users" usergroup for "Follow Forum Moderation Rules" to No.

Create a new usergroup called "Verified users" based on the settings for Registered users, but change the moderation rules setting to Yes.

Set up a promotion so after one post (or however many you want) registered users get moved to the verified users group.

Using this method users do not get to post openly until they have had at least one post approved. It means you still have to wade through spam yourself, but your users shouldn't see it.

Hope this helps.

What I also found was useful with this method is something that makes posts pending moderation more obvious to mods and admins. The following modification is great for this:

i left my site on question and answers fora few days and now that seems to be broken also as i am getting tons of registations per day.

more than normal that is.

Has anyojne flagged this as a bug with vbulletin ?

It is likely that someone has compiled a list of the questions you have and therefore, know the answer to any of your questions.

turbosatan 11-05-2008 08:33 AM

the spam seems to have abated a lot.

i think the issue was the new version of xrumerwhich came out and had a 14 dayfree trial with it.

as usual scammers wont spend a penny to make a pound and after the 14 days everythign seems back to normal.

is there any kind of centralised resource we canput together with a big list of different questions which can be cycled through?

i mean a list big enought to be more work than its worth to the spammers?
