Yes.....

As far as I was aware this is the only way to upgrade to 3.7.3?

But how could it effect the older testbed aswell?

You did run upgrade.php when you upgraded? Correct?

The sercurity token update was made many versions ago (3.7 RC4) so I don't understand how it would just suddenly "come online".

It may be best to open a support ticket at vBulletin.com members area. Maybe one of the tech team can help you out a lot quicker and more easily.
