This is great if you have a classifieds forum and you want to protect your traders (in a limited but responsible way) from people under 18. Since you can not enter into an enforceable contract with a minor, you're much better trading with their parents.

nice job Captain! :P

how about restriction to read forum also based on age?

This is needed indeed. I think that if you do not want underaged users to post then you also do not want them to read. Or can anyone give me an example where you only want/need to restrict posting rights?

How can you check the age of guests? You can't. And there is no point in blocking members from reading forums and not guests.

Don't want to give away any trade secrets here, but that is commercial suicide.
One major way to make money from your forum is banners. Block visitors and you will be blocking roughly two thirds of your potential banner impressions (based on our stats of one third members two thirds guests on average).
And block visitors and you are blocking spiders so the threads in that forum won't get into Google.
Bad, bad idea blocking guests.

I don' t think that this is commercial suicide for most sites. I expect this mod to be used by sites with little adult content.

Our site for example does not have any adult forum yet and we are still wondering whether it will have one in the future. I cannot imagine that blocking guests from such a section would have much impact on us. We would need to focus on adult content to make this happen and that is not what we intend to do.

Won't a user be able put any DOB in their profile, then be able to access it?

Regards Jason :)

The adult market - particularly video - is a huge one. If you can tap into it, there is huge advertising revenue potential.

Yes, but if you don't tell them *why* it is needed initially (compulsory at registration ideally), then they are likely to enter their real DOB.
Make their DOB non-editable so they can't change it themselves.
Then when they come to access a forum for which they need to be 18, they may give you some tale that they entered the wrong DOB and ask you to change it for them. We ask them to fax over proof.
