buy a separate hard drive and keep a backup of important files... just in case.

My first thought was overheating, but with the other issues you've mentioned, I'm leaning more towards are hard drive issue. My first suggestion would be to back up anything of importance to you in case of a hard drive failure (to CD/RW or DVD/+RW) - and do so periodically.
