Why do the vBulletin default smilies (I mean the ones that install with vBulletin) and post/thread status icons suck so bad? We have plenty of talented artists. I mean, they really, really suck. It's not just a matter of taste - they have pixels bleeding all over the place...

Huh? I'm quite sure that the buttons for new topics/posts, post icons, forum icons and many of those images are certainly default, as they match the ones you get from vBulletin.com

Not sure of that myself personally, but I am also wanting to know that. However, I don't agree with the huge amounts of people who boast how good the Invision smilies are, as they looked just as boring to me as the default vBulletin smilies, default phpBB smilies, etc.

I think Invision's are nice - better than vB, IMO.
