Interesting read for those considering the plunge: http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut00...ista_cost.html

I've heard nothing but complaints from people that have tried it, and I really don't see the point in upgrading while XP is still working fine for me.

Here are some more, ehm, "interesting" links for people who are considering upgrading:

I've been using Vista Ultimate RTM on my laptop since November. It's a very nice OS, in my opinion, and a huge upgrade when compared to XP.

I have heard many good things about Vista actually.

I was offered Vista on a rebate not long ago and it should arrive soon. I cannot wait to try it. One of the major improvements I heard about was virtual memory management. As developers I am sure others here have encountered those types of problems here. The only real way to erase your cache is to reboot... Even with large caches set on other drives problems can still be encountered after a few hours of messing with databases and code... I am hoping Vista will solve this problem..

I also heard that it has improved networking a great deal too. This will be a bonus for me because my house is networked to the fullest with 3 pc's and 2 laptops..

I just hope it is as good as the things I have heard about it.....

there aren't many things vista can do, that xpPro can't.

I wont be using it until I buy a new machine, and even then, I may get the new MAC :D

RichieBoy67 02-04-2007 10:07 PM

Well I don't know about that loco.. It has been worked on by the industries best for how many years now? There has to be something good about it...

The memory management is MUCH better..... Like I said..... Same machine..... Running XPpro and then upgraded to Vista Ultimate........ It's like a new machine. Photoshop CS2 with tons of extras loads now in 2 seconds or less.... Took 5 or more before. Every program I have loads instantly now and no crashes yet. I haven't even gotten into all the other features such as bitlock.

The only weird thing I've noticed is my mousepad... When I go to scroll on the right side the cursor jumps about half an ince to the left...... Still scrolls...... Very minor annoyance considering the awesome performance improvement. I'm sure enough people will complain to Dell about this and they'll get an updated driver. Actually, I think I'll write them about it..... :D

I would think people having problems maybe don't have a stout enough machine or graphics card.

It blows XP away in performance.... That's about 95% of the rating in my opinion........

Wow-- I can't wait!!!

I've been happily using Vista since RC1, I tested beta 2 which was still buggy. And I already upgraded to Ultimate RTM.

Hands down it's faster, and better than XP, even more so when you disable all the areo fancy stuff.

RichieBoy67 02-06-2007 12:22 AM

I heard that there were major improvements with file management, networking and memory management...

How have these things been improved and changed???

What about the desktop and just general system navigation? Have these things changed??

Has anyone encountered any driver issues or hardware issues?

Thanks.... Next in line... 2026 -- Long Horn finally gets increased ...
