Sooner or later the person will give up, but you need to have good staff who can keep banning as quick as the person is registering. The only problem is that depending on the determination of the person concerned, this can go on for weeks, if not longer.

Moderation of accounts is useful, but only really if the same IP address is used each time, but then an IP ban would solve than problem anyway. Moderation of posts by the registered users group is also useful, but it isn't really going to be suitable for active sites that get a number of new registrations every day.

(Oh and I know the exact member type you are referring too here)

I agree with that, the trouble is they will just use a proxy as way to get around the IP bans and use free email sevice to register with bogus email addresses.

So there's not really a lot you can do if they start doing that.

the answer is Miserable Users Hack ;)

Attilitus 01-16-2007 11:51 PM

There are actually a number of hacks available which combat users using proxies.

This one converts the proxy ip to the users real ip and allows vbulletin's IP address functions (including IP address banning) to function based on what the hack determines as the user's "real ip"

The other one works by merely banning all open proxies outright... in my experience taking this action is extremely effective, however, it negatively effects just about anyone without a static email address. (When I implemented it, one of my most loyal members could not access the site for a month because they used AOL... it wasn't this particular hack but a vbulletin 3.0.0 alternative though.)

I love Tachy Goes To Coventry and have used it many times as an effective tool for thwarting a member who insists on being part of the community.

Basically they are allowed to join and rant to their hearts content, but no other member has to deal with them. When somebody gets sent to Coventry, it usually takes them days or weeks to figure out that they are being ignored. In that respect, sending them to Coventry gets them off your back for longer than a brute-force banning.

I agree that for the most part keeping a determined user off your board is going to come down to a test of endurance between the user and you and your Mod team. My Mod team loves this particular game and so not too much gets past them.

It is just a thought...but if you set your new registered user level to have all messages moderated then nobody can join up and post rubbish..

As you trust people you can move them on to a higher level without the moderation.
