Yet when someone asks you and offers to give you something for your time, your time automatically becomes much more valuable.

As the previous poster said, most requests have been created already if you search hard enough, here or at any other modifications forum, and if it hasn't - wait 6 months, someone will end up doing it anyway.

I understand charging a premium rate for something that would take days and much research to do, but you know as well as I do many of these requests can be completed with nominal work once you sit down to actually do them.

What is hilarious is that you actually think you know how we manage our time.

When you custom code, you are married. Why would I work for 40$ a full day only to have someone say i didn't do enough despite that? Which is usually the case. I'd pay 40$ not to have that aggrevation because no one ever asks what they want at face value. Once you start, they start with the, "oh one more thing" and if you refuse, they come and trash you.

Here's an old quote, you get what you pay for.

d8tabyte 01-12-2007 10:03 PM

Then don't do requests period. There are many scripts out there for a flat rate that take many more hours to code than say a "display choice of postbit" script. And for the record, just because I don't have the coder title doesn't mean I don't know what it is like to be a coder. I have a newborn, a wife, a full time job and I manage a website that takes a good amount of my time.

If you have issues with how the deal goes down, don't do it. But don't sit here and say it's not worth your time, it makes you sound pompous. I said it depends on the difficulty of the hack, it should be relative - to say anyone who does a job for less than 30$ an hour or what ever it is you think you are worth is a hack job, is insulting to those who simply enjoy helping others and just want to be compensated for their time without raping the admin of what ever board requested the hack.

That's funny. I say I wont take the work and you put me down.

I explain it and you say don't take the work then, which I already made clear I don't for that type fee.

Go figure.

Actually, I am not in any pissing contest with you. I was originally talking about what Stangsta said. You just keep repeating yourself. I've made my point and so have you - be done with it.

When did I ever spend countless hours supporting hacks, and creating hacks? The ones I released I used for my own site and wanted to share with the community. So something that was ALREADY MADE (pay attention) and took no time at all to post on vb.org....still with me? That is supported in my spare time or my bored time (to help the community), Does not cost me a thing, not even time in my eyes. Maybe its good enough for me and I dont want to add user requests......but It gets done out of pure goodwill, and not greed.

On the flip side, people ask me to do work all the time, from installations to custom coding. I give them a fair price and an honest answer of whether I can do it or not. So now that I have to say.....do an install....during my "prime time" hours because they want you to do it RIGHT NOW!!!1, and maybe not do something with my family or friends...or even relax and watch some football after coming home from my full time job, I should charge them $40 for going out of my way to do something for them that they cant do or are too lazy to do? Are you f*ing kidding me? These people dont want to wait 6 months, THEY WANT IT NOW!!!! And Noppid is 100% correct when he says they ask for that "oh, 1 more thing" and if you cant do it or wont do it for the same price, they trash talk you. So yes, Pay my price, a fair price, and all things considered....If you need something else, ask and if its no big deal, i'll hook you up only because I wasnt lowballed. And the "days and research" WE HAVE ALREADY DONE IT WITH OUR YEARS OF EXPERIENCE! That costs something....time.

Do me a favor, dont even get me started....

One of the biggest misconceptions that vBulletin.org has given is the perception that there is a free and open community to support the additions to a paid product.

It works when people give freely. It does not work when people make demands.

From my list:

Send PM or Mail with new User Notes posted - It wasn´t availabe when I requested this.

Showing posts/member count on non-forum HTML page - Where ?

New Posts Counter ? - Not in the form I would like

Featured Poll on Index.php - can be done with default setups (no need for hack) - Not true, this is not a standard feature - it was done after I requested it.

Showing results 1 to 30 of 74 - Not in the form I would like

just find a coder whose work/attitude you like and try to get in touch with them regarding it.

maybe another feature to help with this would be to allow coders to click a checkbox which says whether they do custom work or not and then in the mods they release there's a little graphic saying they do that type of work and/or have a coder database of people that do custom work and allow for users to give feedback about the work the coder has done for them.
