It's to make helping people easier on the coders/staff and the admins...

The AdminCP thing is more pointless, because my guess if they know how to change their AdminCP directory, they know where it is. ;)

Downside? 60 seconds of investment. Why not?

derekivey 08-28-2006 04:17 PM

Yeah, I really don't see why it shouldn't be added. It saves hack authors lots of time... those who think it's pointless don't have to use it.

what time does it take them? What are you guys talking about?A URL doesn't have 11000 letters! Why a tag?

The idea is that it checks the (currently viewing) user's profile, and replaces [forums] with their homepage. When they are helping somebody, they can just say something like, go to [yourforums]/admincp/rebuildsomething.php. This will be shown as "go to http://www.mysite.com/forums/admincp...dsomething.php.

This will prevent the user from asking "why does it say page not found? I went to http://www.example.com/forums/adminc...dsomething.php and it doesn't exist?", and also prevents the person helping from both having to deal with that, and from being even more helpful and looking up their homepage.

Dynamic. :)

Again, it's not really a big deal, but I don't see any foresee any valid reasons why this is bad.

OH!Sorry now I get it.I though it was the posters forum.Excuse me,now I see the point. Now I think I agree but still is not as needed :)

Though it was pointed out that a lot of users do not have their homepage set in their profile, I believe that something like this would actually encourage users to fill in the field. What's the purpose of this site? To help out users with customizing their forum. Strictly being a designer, I've noticed that one of the biggest problems I've seen users having is that their directories are not set properly. There are those who are entirely computer-illiterate and do not understand bits and pieces of where certain things go.

Is this absolutely necessary to help users? Not at all. However, it's another step toward making it even easier for the person acquiring the help- not offering. I like the idea, and it'd be handy as it'd solve the problem for everyone viewing that particular thread, not just the one post it was originally made for. Two thumbs up from me.

At first sight this sounds like a good idea, although i personally don't really see it as very usefull. I however also see some downsides to it:
  • Since this would personalize posts based on the person viewing it, post cache would become useless and it would increase server load. This alone would already be enough reason to be very carefull before implementing this.
  • Most people that fill out their homepage will set this to what the name suggests: their homepage. The homepage is in many cases not the same as their board URL, and that might lead to more confusing, especially to those less experienced members for who it might be usefull.
  • Homepage don't need to be set to your personal board. Again possibly leading to confusion.
  • A lot of people have or help on mulitple board....again confusion possible.
