Try to disable text sitemap option, remove all *.gz files from data/ folder and regenerate sitemap.

When I click on Your Google Sitemap Index URL, it says page not found. Why is this? It's also in a strange .gz format

im just getting the wrong download link in the reports page -

Link i get is *ww.mysite.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz

but its actually saving to

*ww.mysite.com/vbseo_sitemap/data/sitemap_index.xml.gz

Make sure that you created .htaccess file as described and you should access sitemap as www.mysite.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
