The downside to that version will be that URL.s will look like http://www.whatever.com/archive/topic.php/400.html instead of just "topic/400.html". But it still works ;)

do you have a current google search hack?

Thanks

Sal Collaziano 11-24-2003 04:29 AM

This seems to be working for me but I get one of these at the top and bottom of the page:

Warning: main(): stream does not support seeking in......

hvacr 11-24-2003 05:33 PM

Ok, so you get 1 zillion spots on google, whats that
mean? abosoulely nothing.. sure I am indexed on
google and some others, so? so far, the only way
they can find me is if the EXACT domain name is
entered, then big deal, your listing will come up,
what does that mean? that means that everyone has to
already know your exact domain to pull your listing,
but if thats the case, why even search it at all,
i have tried countless words that surround my
domain name, NOTHING, pulls everything ones and
his brothers site, but not mine... unless you can get
number 1 in all engines, you are nothing on the net.

so how come i can find my site only pulling my
domain name, but not with keywords, if you
cant find my site with keywords then you will
never be found but by accident.

I have had 1 domain for years, and it is just
now being indexed by some of the engines, last
but not least, if you do not enter the exact
domain name, you will never find me.

so what if you are indexed 1 million times...
it really means nothing if you cant be
found by keywords...

atomic fireball 11-24-2003 05:39 PM

hvacr, what's your exact site and forum url?

Just because you can't find your site on google by doing keyword searches, doesn't mean others will have the same problem. There could be a few reasons:

1. You're not doing a proper keyword search
2. You're not giving google the proper amount of time to properly index your site

Again, post your site and forum, and let us see if we can get some searches to pop up on google.

Its from experiance, and knowing from being listed
for 2 years, and seeing only 5 vistors a month.

although, this is the newest site that i am
using with this script, the funny thing is
that one listing has shown for the actual
site itself, but not from the script...

http://www.forumschat.net

right now the only way that i have
found it is with direct domain search on google.

atomic fireball 11-24-2003 06:01 PM

hvacr, I just checked your site, and you have a total of 8 posts for your entire forum. That's the answer. I'm guessing you simply don't have enough content to have your actual forum pages show up in google.

Google may spider your pages, but they don't always include all pages in their index. Only google really knows the true criteria as to what they use to have pages show up. With only 8 posts on your forum, most of which have less than 30 words or so, google probably just doesn't feel that it adds to their engine to have your forum listed at this time.

I have been using SkuZZy's archive hack since March of this year and it has been wonderful.. BUT now I am getting worried.. What is going to happen to our links when we upgrade to vb3?

Please see and respond in this thread: (It may apply to all archive hacks)

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...353#post450353

Freezerator 12-04-2003 08:21 AM

They all will be renewed, because vb3 has his own archive wich can be spidered.

FlyBoy73 12-04-2003 06:27 PM

I understand that, but if the links in the archive are different at all, wouldn't the Search Engine drop the then dead links and start re-indexing the new?

Does SkuZZy's archive hack archive the exact same way as Teck's and what vb3 is using?

I have the same problem:

Warning: main(): stream does not support seeking in /home/mydomain/public_html/forums/archive/index.php on line 116

Has something to do with the inlcude files so I just put in the raw code for the header and footer and works fine without the header.php and footer.php. Small inconvenience.

PurpleCow 12-10-2003 01:44 AM

Lets say, i have my forums at http://forums.mydomain.com and want to install this hack in http://archive.mydomain.com . is it possible to do so ??

Thanks for any help.

Cheers

It's the same thing. A subdomain merely points to another directory on a server. The forums subdomain is probably a directory off of the domain -- I think of it like an alias. I'm waiting to get bashed for my simple definition. :D

PurpleCow 12-10-2003 07:40 AM

Okay - hope i get another opinion abt that !

This hack sounds very interesting than anyother similiar archiving hack, simply b'cos it doesn't have and url characters after a file extension like .php while other archiving hacks have directorues or files after a .php extension.

So, further to this...isn't it possible to have thread descriptions, posting date, number of posts and number of threads ( for forum home ) in the archive also. It would be much better.

Also, someone take a look at dbforums.com/archive. fastforward muct be coding a custom hack which is very very interesting. I wish, this particular hack also developes into one such !

Thanks much
Cheers

This doesn't appear to have worked well for me, traffic-wise. :(

Everything installed fine and I first submitted to all the search engines in September. About a week later I did get a lot of bots online - most seemed to be Inktomi or AltaVista, I only saw Google a couple of times. I did notice that most of the time they didn't go into the archive even though I submitted that url (and have a link to it on my homepage and forum). However that was it really. I resubmitted over the next couple of months - and have just done so now - but only get a couple of bots (not google) come around.

I checked to find how many listings I got - a mere 32. This was about the same as I had before I installed this hack, and none are from the archive. Also like the guy above said, I have to type my url to get them. None of the keywords bring me up. If people know my url they ain't gonna look for me on the search engine, so I'm beginning to wonder what the point is.

On the rare occasions the bots appeared to look in the archive in the online.php I never saw a 'clean' url listed, but one with a session cookie in it. I thought it wasn't supposed to do that?

Anyway, it's been 3mths now and for whatever reason Google isn't archiving me. As my forum isn't doing brilliantly at the moment I was hoping for more traffic from the Search Engines, but that isn't happening. I've just submitted the archive url and the home page again, but I'm probably not gonna bother anymore.

Aside from the fact it got me no traffic, the archive is cool to read if my connection is ever sluggish. :)

Hi everyone - has anyone been able to code "What's New" not to display "Unknown" location whenever someone is looking at the archive?

SkuZZy 01-19-2004 02:43 PM

Just stopping in to say hi, long time since ive been here. Glad to see people are still installing this :D It's perfect for those people who decide to stick with vb2. Personally I am not too fond of vb3 yet, but im sure it will grow on me :D

Fking 01-19-2004 08:32 PM

what is the best way to link the forum and the archive in order to get best results in the SEs?

Just make sure the archive is linked from the main pages of your site. I would recommend putting the link on the bottom of all your main forum pages. Look at http://www.battleforums.com for an example of this. At the bottom of all the forums pages, there is a "History" link, that links to the archive.

Fking 01-20-2004 07:36 AM

which template i have to edit in order to put this link on the bottom of all pages?

Xenon 01-20-2004 02:51 PM

footer?

dgessler 01-30-2004 06:15 PM

Anyone know why after I installed the script, it works fine, but for the top and bottom of the archive pages I get this error:

Warning: main(): stream does not support seeking in /home/aimforum/public_html/archive/index.php on line 103

Thanks,
Dan Gessler

Mod_mime - You will NEED mod_mime to run these scripts. Mod_mime is a free module which enables a directive called "ForceType". This allows you to use the .htaccess file included to force your files into php mode, which allows simple URL's, without .php in them. If you can see the front page of your archive, but get an error page when you click on any links then this is your problem. To fix it, you will need to install mod_mime, or ask your host to do it. It's a FREE module. For more information, visit http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_mime.html

You're running on Windows I'm assuming?

Gary King 03-17-2004 11:29 PM

I can't seem to get this to work, I installed and the links lead to a 404 :(
What should the correct, default format for forums and topics be? Also mod_mime etc. is installed on the server FYI :)

dethfire 03-21-2004 03:49 PM

any way to get this to work with vb3?

There's a built-in archive for vB3.

as I'm sure your aware gary there is a large percentage of people who can't use the built in archive because they either use IIS or have PHP as CGI

Ah I wasn't aware that those were required for it to function correctly. My mistake! :)

You shouldn't ask in this thread; and nope I haven't looked into this yet :) Post a Hack Request for this :)

Areku 03-25-2004 01:39 PM

Rather than porting it to vb3, what about using the one that comes with VB3 but write an apache mod rewrite rule to make the old links indexed already by google still work and redirect to the correct, new vb3 format?

Any1?

dethfire 03-25-2004 10:01 PM

the problem is the archive doesn't work on all servers

gary I made a post in the request forum
