I know from Phalynx that the mod will possibly not being ported into 3.8. The current version of the mod can't be installed on a 3.8 forum anyway.
I'm aware that this mod is better in some ways than the new group discussion feature in 3.8, but nevertheless vB 3.8 does include some social group features which are bloody needed like the ability to transfer groups from one member to another. So for those who decide to switch, there is something like a converter needed, and I actually hired a freelancer to get it coded. I'll keep you updated about it, and will probably post it here at vB.org as a mod when it's finished. |
I hope you have his permission...

He does not need my permission for this as there are now changes in my code. Also, I would support such a tool. Based on this I would love to see a converter vB3.8 -> SocialForums.
|
Eeek. I can't be sure, but I upgraded to 3.8.0 and social groups are now completely broken - no discussion capability at all.
|
Installed! Looking good so far but ...
vB 3.7.3 PL1 btw .. |
I have to say I shan't be upgrading to 3.8 because of Social Forums not working. vB's new system, whilst an improvement on what went before, still leaves Social Group discussions isolated just like the blogs...if like me you have a site where everyone uses Today's Posts/New Posts, then nobody EVER sees these things. My site's last blog post was in August, for example.
To be honest I'm starting to regret using all the blogs and social networking stuff, it's ill thought out and cobbled together very badly, and now they are having to change it all round again which breaks all the custom fixes people put in to make it work properly - such as this excellent mod! The *only* way forward for Jelsoft is to have social group discussion posts and blog entries/comments mixed into getdaily and getnew searches, with an additional column to show what each result is..."Forum Post", "Blog Post", "Social Group Post" etc. That's the ONLY way it will ever work properly. But that's not really for this thread. |
And with that, I successfully killed yet another thread.
It's a new service I offer. Have YOU got a thread that's bubbling along nicely that you would like stopped in its tracks? Then drop me a line....I'll post to it, and I guarantee it won't get any more replies, ever! |
Does this service work on nagging ex girlfriends? lol

Newbie here! I was planning on upgrading to 3.8 when past beta mainly because of new blogging a social group features. I really want features like this on 3.8 for social groups! Should I just stick with 3.7 and use upload this social groups or wait until 3.8 comes out and it will be close to what this has to offer? I like the idea of groups having their own forums!!
|
I installed it, and got most everything working — except: users who want to create the forum can't see the option. I made it so all usergroups could do that in any social group they are in, and the option still isn't showing up on the bottom bar like it does for me, the admin. Help please!
|
Never mind about the previous post. I figured it out. The only person who can create the forum is the person who created the user group. And a user group needs to be created before a forum can be created.
Its all good and we're loving the mod!!! |

Is there a lot of difference between the update Groups on 3.8 and this mod? if so please list! Thanks for the help |
I finally have this working with vb3.8
Everything worked fine except the links in group footer. I've found that the Hook Location (group_view_message_start) no longer exists in vb3.8 When I changed the plugin hook location to (group_view_discussion_start), everything is fine. I am assuming that the group_view_discussion_start Hook Location has replaced the group_view_message_start maybe? |
Hey I have set this up and it creates the forum but when I try and visit them it gives me an error:
Database error in vBulletin 3.7.4: Invalid SQL: SELECT thread.threadid, lastpost, open FROM thread AS thread WHERE forumid = 14 AND (sticky = 1 OR threadid IN ()) AND visible IN (0,1,2); MySQL Error : You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ')) AND visible IN (0,1,2)' at line 5 Error Number : 1064 Request Date : Thursday, November 13th 2008 @ 01:53:36 PM Error Date : Thursday, November 13th 2008 @ 01:53:36 PM Script : http://my site Referrer : http://my site IP Address : ip address Username : admin Classname : vB_Database MySQL Version : 5.0.45-community |
This now seems to be cocking up my whole forum making others unavailable even after I have uninstalled this product...some assistance would be much appreciated.
|
First, thanks and good job for creating this mod. Just upgraded my forum to vb 3.7.x and introduced a bunch of new features to the members which include the socialforum. They love it.
Next is a suggestion: can you please change the error message that pops up when non-group members trying to reply to a thread in socialforum to a more friendly message like "please join this social group [link] before you can create a new post". Thanks in advance. |
Question: What settings do I change to make it so that only people in the social group can see the new social group forum on the front page?
Say I have a social group named COCA-COLA under parent category SODAS. I also have a social group named PEPSI. How do I make it so unregistered users do not see any of the social groups on the main forum page, members of COCA-COLA only see COCA-COLA, and PEPSI only sees PEPSI? |
Ah, I figured it out. Now.. is there a way to have a forum deleted when the social group is deleted?

So it wi worth while to have this mod if you are using 3.8? Are you using the default Vbulletin social group and does it compliment it? Or are you just using the this mod alone?? Thanks so much for the help! |
I havent tested it completely - only noticed an outdated hook.
From what I can see, the vB Social Group message board is below each group and the Social Forum adds a seperate forum to a specified forum id of choice. The way I have it currently is using the group discussion area for only group members and the created Social Forum as Public discussion as a Gaming Clan type setup. |
This mod needs to be changed to run with vB 3.8
Will do this next week if I find some spare time. |
Can I ask a quick slightly ot question Phalynx - is there no built in version of the conditional is_member_of for social groups?
|
First, thanks for this great mod. It added much more value to the social groups feature.
(Well, it's a good gesture to thank/praise first before making bug report) Next is a bug report: The "last post by" info in social groups listing are not displayed when the last activity in a social group was a post in the socialforum. Please refer attached screenshot. Those with Last Post = "X days ago" with no "By userX" are social groups for which the last post was a post in the socialforum. Those with "By userX" are groups for which the last post was a social group message. Shouldn't the behavior for both situations be the same? Thanks. |
Thank ya for this addon all worked fine.
edit: ive solved my problem, so just thank you, its a great addon :) |
Also, the mod seems to mess with the message count and last activity timestamp on social groups listing when both social group messages and social forum are available. Since you give an option to either turn off the group messages or leave them on, you should at least take in consideration cases when a social group has both group messages and forum posts. Message count should be sum of messages and posts and last activity timestamp should take the last message or the last post.

As promised, I'm now publishing a tool to convert the social forums of this mod to the new social group discussions feature in vB 3.8.
See https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=197898 |

p/s: maybe you could put the tool up as a mod on its own? there's a setting in vb.org mod thread where you can relate your tool back with SocialForum. |

I guess i should contact a moderator to clarify this. |
