I've been waiting 18 months for vbseo to fix that flaw (slated for vbseo 3.6.1). I'm tired of waiting and it's time to purchase a new thanks/likes system. I think you'll find there are a LOT of people that feel the same way:

I have same issue, with guests?s post.

If I click thanks or like to any guest post, I receive that message

Guest posts is something that hasn't been tested, I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it compatible but I'll look into it :)

I have a question: I use a customized postbit legacy so how would I get it just to say "Likes: X" or "Thanks: X".

That display is currently not possible, you can disable given or received likes but you cannot have it say just "Likes: X" - it would always be "Likes (Received): X".
