If a member doesn't have access to view/download a link, the URL is currently absent. The user is shown the title of the link but don't understand why they cannot download it. This is confusing to members, because they don't understand why they cannot view/download the link. I propose you change this so the link is present, but the user is shown an customizable error message template instead. This will allow the admin to illustrate why the user cannot download the link and remove any confusion.

Keep up the good work Andrew !

Upgraded within 3 Minutes from 1.60c to 2.0.7rc (vB 3.0.7 - 3.5.1).
The best Links-/Database i've ever seen !

THX A LOT !!! :nervous:

Thanks - this behaviour was introduced in response to another request. It depends on the value of *protected_link* on the admin/settings page:

0: no hyperlink shown
1: normal link, generates a 'no permission' + login template if no access available
2: link jumps to registration dialogue

The default value is 0.

I can add another option to offer a custom template (message + login + register?) if you think this is necessary.

Benj 11-13-2005 11:54 AM

hey andrew... just wondering if this is possible. xml feeds ... mainly i would like one for a users favorites page but for otherpages would be cool 2.

cheers mate

Feeds from somewhere else into LDM or feeds to somewhere else from LDM?

TundraSoul 11-13-2005 06:22 PM

I think a custom message template is always better than vBulletins default error template. Users may see the default error, and often still don't understand why they cannot download the file/link. Further, if they register, as the vB error template suggests, and then still cannot download the file/link, they don't understand why they don't have permission.

Allan 11-15-2005 09:59 AM

Andrew, how to put the last entries on the forumhome as well as the number please ?

AndrewD 11-16-2005 03:03 PM

* edited* 2.1.0 now the official release

I had promised that the release candidate of 2.0.7 would go final but people keep asking for more and more and more...

Attached is the release candidate for 2.1.0 (version number increased because more requests have been addressed). Please - Slave, Benj, Allan and others - can you test this out.

Since 2.0.7, the main changes have been made:

(for EasyTarget) The abbreviated/full linkbits have become available as user option, with a collapse bit on the links display
(for me) The admin category mass edit features have been extended considerably
(for Slave) Admin 'can_view_names' permission is distinguished from 'can_view_hits'
(for Allan) A new plugin patches the forumhome display so that latest link info appears for any forums which are actually category links
A Spanish translation is included (thanks Hugo)
(for BenJ) The release/add-in directory contains sample code for driving an XML feed to an external page
(for TundraSoul) 'No Permission' errors on link access are now handled via an LDM template and phrases

Bugs fixed:
> Category selector omits categories that current user cannot visit
> local_resize no longer glitches on remote files
> Empty upload filetype lists handled correctly
> Includes thumbnails in linkbit_table; image urls in thumbnails behave according to template
> SQL queries consistent across all functions (fixes search bugs reported by Slave)
> Category collapse state remembered correctly
> Various items tidied up a la Slave

Thanks - I'm hoping we're nearly there.

Benj 11-16-2005 03:10 PM

sweet works for me :D how would i edit the xml external file to return the favorites for a user. i was kinda hoping to pass a user id in the file like xml.php?userid=6 which would produce an xml document containing all the favs of userid 6

sorry im a pain i know all the rest seems to work for me

Slave 11-16-2005 03:36 PM

Cool AndrewD .. thanks :)

Just installing now .. I'll let you know how I get on ..

Slave 11-16-2005 06:17 PM

Looking good .. I've not found any bugs .. yet! :)

Seems like you've added most of my suggestions from above .. so thanks for that :D .. and all of the bugs mentioned seem to have been fixed .. nice one.

I've a few extra suggestions for you to consider .. for future versions ..

In the links mass edit could we have, for the Apply column, an all select/all deselect tick box (like they do for some vB options)?

Could we also have the same sort of thing for the open/closed radio buttons in the cat admin page?

Perhaps a cat mass edit system similar to the links mass edit?

Again in the mass edit admin page .. as well as the options for open/closed could we have a "hide" option for the cats? (I take it closed just stops people posting new links to cats as it seems you can still click links within closed cats)

A open/close/hide option within the add/edit cat page?

Is there any need to show "My Links" to guests?

When viewing a cat when you hover over the collapse option (nice idea btw) add a mouse-over alt entry .. ie "Click here for simple view" and "Click here for expanded view" depending on the state of the button.

I'll keep playing to see if I can come up with anything else .. but from what I can see this seems stable enough to become the main release :)

Slave 11-16-2005 07:31 PM

Couple of things I've just noticed ..

The "database_name" option in the admin settings .. this works fine within the breadcrumbs for local_links.php but when doing any admin work within local_links_admin.php it goes back to the default name in the breadcrumbs ..

It just doesn't look right .. ;)

Also .. the cat drop-down menu at the bottom of the page is missing on the main search page ..

On the admin settings page .. "monitor_template" has no description .. what does this do and what are the options?

Oh, and, possibly make "template_linkbit" a per cat option?

I was thinking of a way to make the "show_hit_parade" option 2 a bit tidier when within a cat. Instead of how it is now (all on the right in a top-down list with lots of space on the left) you could show it like you do Sub-forums on the front page ..

ie .. (starting on the left hand side) ..

Most popular entries during the last 30 days: link[] link[] link[]

with hit numbers within the []'s ..

hmm .. don't know .. it might work, it would certainly save space :)

Benj 11-16-2005 08:40 PM

had my little fiddle around look amazing andrew cheers alot.... only suggestions i can make are about the xml feed, and maybe an option to upload the image asociated with links as a pose to just a link... apart from that dunno....

o yeah any other thoughts on the upwards / downwards arrows ? with regards to files movin

Allan 11-16-2005 08:48 PM

Not understand Andrew for my question. (how to put the last entries on the forumhome as well as the number ?)

suggestion, Put the last links on the main page (look screen, vBadvanced for exemple)

TundraSoul 11-16-2005 09:16 PM

We're testing it out now. Thanks for the no permission error template. It's so much nicer than vB's error template. We now have over 1500 links and everyone wants this option more than anything else (from the wishlist).

+ Provide keyword associations
- perhaps auto-searches linked to user profile.

I'll have to go back and edit all the links but it will be totally worth it. Just remember to allow the link to be associated with any number of choices from a users profile field. I'm willing to test this out if needed.

Hi Andrew,

is there a way to prevent users exploiting the jukebox system.

You see, when an user registers and plays media via the jukebox (streamer), he can bookmark the jukebox page and go directly next time without having to sign up.

Benj 11-17-2005 10:47 AM

is anyone running this with vbstyles element skin... if so could you post a link to your forum.... i just want to see how it would look before i get it

a) You can always turn off 'can_play_musicbox' on the LDM permissions page by usergroup

b) As far as I thought, bookmarking the link does not allow the user to bypass the access permissions - the player checks for a valid logged in user before streaming the file. If I'm wrong, let me know and I'll check/fix.

Is there something else you want to block?

Slave 11-17-2005 12:19 PM

AndrewD .. I noticed that the xml file for integrating the admin options into the AdminCP had "Settings and Permissions" as one option instead of separate (hangover from when they were on one page?) ..

I've redone the file with Permissions as a separate link .. :)

welo 11-17-2005 01:45 PM

Quick question here: Been busy and haven't upgraded since 2.0.2. Will I need to go through each subsequent release to get it to the latest version? Or can I just perform the upgrade for 2.1.0?

Hi,

The thing is, the links and downloads manager installed on my website is solely based on the jukebox.

With bookmarking, I meant bookmarking the streamurl.

For example, when the user clicks on the winamp icon, it opens a new window playing the file. The users can mark that 'window' and go from there directly.

Is there a way to remove the address bar and limit the size of the window so that they cannot scroll.

I know that it can be done with javascript like:

javascript:openNewWindow('link','height=416,width= 575,toolbar=no,scrollbars=yes,left=0,top=0')

but how would you implement that in the vb template?

Thanks in advance

Regards

GamerJunk.net 11-17-2005 05:10 PM

I have something like that in some html I use ..

Code:

<a onclick="MyWindow=window.open('FileYouWantToShowInTheWindowHere.php','MyWindow','toolbar=no,location=no,directories=no,status=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=yes,resizable=no,width=400,height=300,left=150,top=150'); return false;" href="#">TextOrImageHere</a>
(watch out, vB adds spaces into the above code as the line is so long)

Is that the sort of thing you're after?

Yes, exactly, how can I implement that for the jukebox?

heh .. not sure tbh, I don't use the jukebox .. I was hoping you'd know and be able to use the code I gave to sort it out ..

I'm sure AndrewD will be able to put it to good use .. :)

Slave 11-17-2005 10:31 PM

Oh AndrewD .. when I was reading the instructions about the jukebox I noticed a couple of mistakes in the instructions.txt file ..

In the Sections key you have "The jukebox" at 4.5 and "Thumbnail images" at 4.6 .. but when you look at the sections they are reversed with "Thumbnail images" at 4.5 and "The jukebox" at 4.6 ..

Also within the Sections key you have "Icons" showing as 3.9 when it should be 3.6 .. and "Mime type" as 3.10 instead if 3.7 ..

Just perform the upgrade - it takes you all the way in one go. Maybe hang in there until I put 2.1.0 as the official release (tomorrow/Saturday), as there are some very minor phrasing/menu pieces to fix in the beta.

welo 11-18-2005 02:56 PM

Thanks Andrew. Will wait on that one then.

EasyTarget 11-18-2005 06:38 PM

small bug? I uploaded a jpg and it included the pic in the listing. (maybe that's how its supposed to work) but then I edited the listing and uploaded an actual zip in place of the .jpg that had been there and it did not upload the file, was left as nothing.

silurius 11-18-2005 07:54 PM

I may have missed this in the thread, but what is supposed to happen when a submitter's login name has changed? I see that the old name is still displayed and does not get updated.

You're right, this is how it behaves at the moment. It speeds up the database searches. It needs fixing - I'll put this on the list.

AndrewD 11-19-2005 01:36 PM

I've uploaded version 2.1.0 in the first post of this thread as the new official thread. This consolidates all the changes during the last couple of months, and fixes the minor points reported this week with the test of 2.1.0.

I will continue to work on this, with priority to 'smart searches' - e.g. ability to tie these to user profiles.
