Not to be a complete idiot, however, how can I change from Arcticle Catagories on article.php to something different?

I am sure this is something small, however, maybe I am not that bright :hurt:

This one is easy. Just make a new category and put the url for the main category of the articles in the "Forum Link" field on the new category setup.

Fully tested and working on vBulletin 3.0.1.
Part of www.v3arcade.com

INTRODUCTION
v3 Articles was originally written for the fine people at www.DodgeTalk.com, for use with their vBulletin forum. The purpose of this add-on is to provide a place in vBulletin for articles (e.g. news, reviews, editorials) similar to that of the thread interface - but with a more content-oriented approach.

Features:
- Usergroup based permissions
- Full editing/deletion/moderation system
- Article attachments
- Article ratings
- Comments system
- "Featured Article" system, give great articles top exposure
- Introduction and category description text
- Smilies and icons
- Full BBCODE/WYSIWYG support
- Attachment captions
- Full page navigation for articles and comments
- Comment dupe checking
- Status icons
- View users' ratings in their comments

Alternatively, check the screenshots! :)

I've tried to make the installation as quick and painless as possible. Enjoy!

WORKING DEMO
You can see a working demo of v3 Articles at www.v3articles.com. (Part of the v3 Arcade website.)

MANY THANKS
- Ron Wilson, of DodgeTalk.com
- Everyone on v3Arcade.com who donated to keep the server running

SUPPORT
Support can be found in the v3 Articles thread on vBulletin.org, and shortly on v3arcade.com. (I'll set up a priority support system.) As always, I'll happily give support for real problems. However, a lot of the time people ask questions about things which have already been answered hundreds of times. If you have a problem caused by not reading through the instructions or checking through the support thread, I can't guarantee a response.

DONATIONS
v3 Articles is free, but my server isn't! Any donations are hugely appreciated in order to help me keep my v3 sites running. (PayPal: john@eovie.com). Many thanks to those who donate!
If you're looking for someone to install v3 Articles for you, email me at john@eovieinteractive.com.

PLEASE CLICK INSTALL
Needless to say, if you install this please click the "Install" button. Thanks. :)

I just have one question. I want to have a feed of my articles on my main page, from a specific category, (so I can display articles like a blog like neowin.net does(although, they dont use v3articles & vb)) Can you tell me how to do that?

As far as I know, you'll have to use a portal system like vbadvanced cmps. That one I know for sure has a module that will do it. Do a search on vbadvanced.com under the cmps for "article module" and you should find some info on it.

dieselpowered 10-03-2004 06:11 AM

hey Samir...answer my question!! ;)

If you're talking about renaming article catgories, that's found in the admin control panel under the articles section. If that's not what you're talking about, then I'm confused. :D

lanc3lot 10-03-2004 11:03 AM

Found it...

tteal 10-03-2004 02:46 PM

Does this work with VBulletin 3.0.3 now?

dieselpowered 10-03-2004 03:23 PM

no I have the categories setup, however, I was referring to when you visit the articles.php page above all the categories it is name "Article Categories" I would rather change that to "Write-up Categories"

Can you help ;)

Something like that usually is in a template somewhere. I have to run right now to cover a car event, but reply to this thread and it'll remind me to look it up for you. I'm curious on that myself. I think I'll change the name of my articles too. :D

dieselpowered 10-03-2004 05:24 PM

Hmmm ya you are probably right...it must be in a template somewhere :confused:

I will try to look for it some more as well!

In a sense, yes. See this link for more information: http://hsv.streetracing.org/About.htm. This is the site which I am revamping using vb as the back end. The new name of the site is www.huntsvillecarscene.com and should be 100% active in the next few days.

hey bud, looks really nice...Let me ask you this...On your index page I notice you have that "Site Navigation" was that a hack or pre-made module?

Thanks!

Mike

SamirDarji 10-04-2004 01:16 PM

The "Site Navigation" is just a module with some html in it. I plan to put conditionals in there so certain links will only appear to certain usergroups (or at least I'll be attempting it).

Wow small world, I live in Huntsville as well and run www.mustangevolution.com

SamirDarji 10-04-2004 07:02 PM

Very small world. :D I'll be at the Rocket City Mustang Club cruise-in on Wed. I'm sure we've probably already run into each other and didn't know it.

And as for minding your own business(I believe thats how you stated it, see quote above), if you where minding your own business you would have whinned to yourself in the first place not bothered the rest of us with your nonsense!!! In your smallness you may be forgeting John has provided us with some fantastic hacks and people have other lives as well. Oh and by the way I did a search of this entire site and I don't exactly see any mod contributions by YOU, only complaints. Perhaps if none of these mods work for you you should "examine" who is installing them...Thank You So Much...!

I do not need to defend myself for asking if John no longer supported this hack or whether he intended to follow through with the upgrade he mentioned on August 17th. Those were/are legitimate questions. There is a big difference in this and in demanding support or upgrades. I merely asked for an update of his intentions.

I have thanked John for his work.

And I have been respectful to all who were respectful to me. Coders on vB.org are very generous people and very kind to share their work with the community.

If John had responded that he had no intention of supporting this hack or of following through with the upgrade that would have been fine ... no complaints ... lots of times people change their minds or life interferes with their plans. I was asking for information ... based on his own stated intentions--not my expectations.

I hope your 8th post in this community is more pleasant than your 7th.

Despite being called names like "moron" etc., I have no fight with anyone, so don't you think we could let this rest?

GamerJunk.net 10-06-2004 01:30 AM

Everything works fine with it until today, it says

Database error in vBulletin 3.0.3:

Invalid SQL: SELECT * FROM article
WHERE categoryid=2 AND (articleuserid=1 OR open IN (0,1)) ORDER BY dateline DESC LIMIT 0,
mysql error: You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 2

mysql error number: 1064

GamerJunk.net 10-06-2004 01:31 AM

It happens when I click an article forum

GamerJunk.net 10-06-2004 03:18 PM

I saved VBulletin Options and Usergroups and I still get the error.

GamerJunk.net 10-06-2004 03:35 PM

Ok I just realized, in my Vbulletin Options I do not have a V3Articles Settings to modify.

I click VBulletin Options and then Vbulletin Options again and there is no V3articles

How can I fix this?

GamerJunk.net 10-07-2004 12:11 AM

Any help?

SamirDarji 10-07-2004 02:51 AM

Seems like something isn't installed correctly. Double check everything carefully. What version of vb do you have?

GamerJunk.net 10-07-2004 04:09 AM

3.0.3

GamerJunk.net 10-07-2004 04:23 AM

I've checked through the steps, it's all done but it's not there...

What inserts it there?

lanc3lot 10-08-2004 10:32 PM

Samir a question, in case u know:)

In the new Vb, u can modify the options, and when u upload lets say an attachement,have there in the "manage attachments" page, more than one upload button(til 10 i think)

If u modify that, strangely it doesnt change the procedure to the upload of images to the articles!

Is it a specif php i must change,for exampe, copy the one from the vb forum(if i find it!) or do u think, it will make everything not work?

Thanks in advance:)

Ps

Also, is there a way, to fix the Who's online bug? I mean, if u press to see the profile, of a user who is in your articles page...its doesnt show it there, and say that there is an error!

Ps2

Also, i noticed another bug...When u say to moderate the articles, the "editors" could submit an article, and it will be shown in the column that says: which article is the latest...so if u press it from there...u can see it!! If u go in the forum..u dont see it!!!

Bug huh?

Any solution to all?:)

SamirDarji 10-09-2004 02:13 PM

Wow, good discovery of bugs. Definitely will make me think twice now of putting this on my production server.

As far as the bug for the attachments, John must have wrote his own routine for attachments. (That explains why the thumbnails have the problems and also this problem.) I don't know where to look yet since I haven't run across the bug, but when I do in the next month or so, I'll be looking for a solution too. My suggestion would be to do a view source on the "manage attachements" box and see if you can trace it to a particular template or php file. Then see how the default vb one is and see if there is a way to modify the default vb one to work or how to re-write the articles one to use the vb variable to determine how many file can be simultaneously uploaded.

The who's online code must also be completely custom. Again, do a view source and see if you can determine where the source code is. Then from there, see if you can modify the stock vb code to work, or if there is a way to change the articles code.

I think the last one may not exactly be a bug. I haven't tested that functionality yet, but when articles are moderated, they won't appear in certain places until validated. The function you have described, if a bug, will be kinda difficult to track down, but seems pretty easy to fix once found.

Keep finding the bugs and post the pieces of code if you find them. I'll try to help you fix them, and if I can't, I know someone else will try. Once I start seriously playing with this system for use on my production server, I'll work on the bugs myself if there are no fixes by then.

Start by looking in the forums. Someone explained that Vbulletin had changed the way they handled attachments and posted a fix which worked for me.

lanc3lot 10-09-2004 02:50 PM

For the attachments bug and the articles..there is a fix...some pages before...i was referring more, to the bug that u can make it..have more than one "upload procedures" in the manage attachment page

:)

SamirDarji 10-09-2004 03:03 PM

But that's still not a bad place to start. If vb did change the attachment method, the who's online and other parts that are having problems may also fall under the same category. The way to discover this is to see if the same problems occur on 3.0.1. Anyone with 3.0.1 willing to help do some functionality tests?

Lionel 10-09-2004 03:40 PM

I've got 3.01 and no problems except for being unable to change articles categories after posting. If you make a mistake and need to switch category you must do so in the db

GamerJunk.net 10-09-2004 03:58 PM

I still don't have v3articles in my vbulletin options...

GamerJunk.net 10-09-2004 05:25 PM

I've checked everything, what part of the install puts the V3 Articles into the VBulletin Options section?

GamerJunk.net 10-09-2004 05:32 PM

Ok I believe I need to manually add this to my database..

What would be the proper query strings for this?

PHP Code:

// Add v3 Article settings

if ($_REQUEST['caction'] == 2)
    {

$DB_site->query("INSERT INTO " TABLE_PREFIX "settinggroup (grouptitle, displayorder, volatile) VALUES ('v3_articles', '2000', '0')");

$DB_site->query("INSERT INTO " TABLE_PREFIX "phrase (phraseid, languageid, varname, text, phrasetypeid) VALUES (NULL, '0',  'settinggroup_v3_articles', 'v3 Articles', '5000')");

setting_add('v3 Articles Introduction''This introduction text will appear at the top of the main v3 Articles page. Use it to describe the purpose of the Articles section.''articleintroduction''''''textarea''1');

setting_add('Comments Per Page''The number of comments to display on each page.''commentsperpage''10''10''''20');

setting_add('Comment Character Limit''The maximum character length of a user\'s comment.''commentlimit''500''500''''30');

setting_add('Articles Per Page''The number of articles to display on each page.''articlesperpage''10''10''''40');

setting_add('Article Attachment Limit''The maximum number of files which can be attached to an article.''maxarticleattachments''10''10''''50');

setting_add('Thumbnails Per Row''The number of "thumbnails", or media items to display per row.''artthumbsperrow''4''4''''60');

setting_add('Featured Article Preview Length''The number of characters to display before the preview text is truncated.''featuredlength''550''550''''70');

GamerJunk.net 10-10-2004 08:10 PM

All I need to do is fix teh articles and I can open up my new site...someone please help me

Amavisca 10-11-2004 08:54 PM
