Google wants your urls to reflect the folder it is in. So, unless you want to make your whole public html area writable (a stupid and horrible idea), using mod_rewrite is the way to do it.

This is the answer that I have been searching for...
Thank You!

I'm running 4.2.0 PL1 and lately Ask Ping has been failing on sitemap update. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hello,
I've upgraded my forum to version4 as well as upgraded to this version of sitemaps.

I submitted the new sitemap to google but it says I have 17 errors on the vbulletin_sitemap_forum_0_32.xml.gz section showing within google webmaster tools. The error is as follows:

"An invalid date was found. Please fix the date or formatting before resubmitting."

Can anyone help me with what I need to do to fix the error?

illkeyone 06-19-2012 04:40 PM

Do I need to do anything for it to work with 4.2.0 PL2 (the latest version).
Please - if possible - add into the chief post about this info =) Thanks & kind regards.

No, there should be no changes required.

What is the difference to the built in sitemap generator of vB 4.2?

datoneer 07-01-2012 05:23 PM

On my google webmaster tools account when i click submit sitemap

I've add vbseo_sitemap after forum root url

After submit i see this error:

Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.

cloferba 07-18-2012 04:20 PM

There is a strange issue...

I have chmod 777 all the required folders, re uploaded all files, reinstalled the xml and sometimes when I try to access to the vBSEO Sitemap Reports tab, the mod ask me for a password,

after click 4..5...or 6 times, the tab doesn´t ask me for it....and I haven´t defined any password!

That's a standard vBulletin sitemap, it has nothing to do with this modification.

You do need to add the entire path to your sitemap, not just the folder.

eg: http://example.com/vbseo_sitemap/sitemap_index.xml

Hello cloferba,

Apologies for not getting back to you before.

You need to define your new password in the 'vBulletin Admin Control Panel -> vBSEO -> vBSEO Sitemap Settings' area. Once you are done, please make sure that the "vbseo_sitemap/" folder has permissions set to 755, *not* 777. The only directory that should be chmod'ed 777 is the "data/" folder.

In the same way, all of the files contained within the "vbseo_sitemap/" folder should be chmod'ed 644 in order to make them non-writable.

I see in google that you have to put these: It is also advised to replace non-english characters in URLs. You can do so in your vBSEO CP -> General Settings -> Character Replacement -> Replace Non-English Characters in URLs?

But i dont have in the vbseo settings any option like that, i dont have character replacement. :(

SOLVE THANKS ;)

The error is probably going to be with your .htaccess files. Give this a shot.

Your /forum directory .htaccess should contain:
(change RED text to match your site name)

Code:

# Comment the following line (add '#' at the beginning)
# to disable mod_rewrite functions.
# Please note: you still need to disable the hack in
# the vBSEO control panel to stop url rewrites.
RewriteEngine On

# Some servers require the Rewritebase directive to be
# enabled (remove '#' at the beginning to activate)
# Please note: when enabled, you must include the path
# to your root vB folder (i.e. RewriteBase /forums/)
#RewriteBase /

#RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.mysite\.com
#RewriteRule (.*) http://www.mysite.com/forums/$1 [L,R=301]

RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(admincp/|modcp/|cron|vbseo_sitemap|api\.php)
RewriteRule ^((archive/)?(.*\.php(/.*)?))$ vbseo.php [L,QSA]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !/(admincp|modcp|clientscript|cpstyles|images)/
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ vbseo.php [L,QSA]

Then also add this to your root .htaccess (if your forum is not installed in the root):
(change RED text to match your site name)

Code:

# Comment the following line (add '#' at the beginning)
# to disable mod_rewrite functions.
# Please note: you still need to disable the hack in
# the vBSEO control panel to stop url rewrites.
RewriteEngine On

# Some servers require the Rewritebase directive to be
# enabled (remove '#' at the beginning to activate)
# Please note: when enabled, you must include the path
# to your root vB folder (i.e. RewriteBase /forums/)
#RewriteBase /forum

#RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.mysite\.com
#RewriteRule (.*) http://www.mysite.com/forum/$1 [L,R=301]

RewriteRule ^forum/((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ forum/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(admincp/|modcp/|cron|vbseo_sitemap|api\.php)
RewriteRule ^forum/((archive/)?(.*\.php(/.*)?))$ forum/vbseo.php [L,QSA]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !/(admincp|modcp|clientscript|cpstyles|images)/
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ forum/vbseo.php [L,QSA]

Also check and make sure your sitemap files are getting created. You should see them in your forum directory along with your vbseo sitemap logs.

Check here:
Code:

forum/vbseo_sitemap/data/

thanks very much for help bzcomputers ive tested this rewrite rules on a blank .htaccess but im getting still the same 404 Not Found error.
my forum is in the root directory.
ive also tried without the character # before the rewrite codes.
and yes the sitemaps are genereted.
clicking on this links gives also the not found error:
.../sitemap_forum_1.xml.gz

but clicking on
...vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=sitemap_forum_1.xml.g z

works.
seems to be a strange rewrite error?

any idea?

What are your settings in: Options - Site Name / URL / Contact Details?

Your Forum Component URL, CMS Component URL and Blog Compnent URL should all be blank in running vBSEO.

Ghostt 09-20-2012 10:01 PM

Assuming www.yoursite.com takes you directly to your forum (i.e. your forum is placed directly in your root).

Try this:

Code:

RewriteEngine On

RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(admincp/|modcp/|cron|vbseo_sitemap|api\.php)
RewriteRule ^((archive/)?(.*\.php(/.*)?))$ vbseo.php [L,QSA]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !/(admincp|modcp|clientscript|cpstyles|images)/
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ vbseo.php [L,QSA]

I have uninstalled VBSEO now

But i have a problem that I cant access the forum, if I try below link:

Code:

www.mysite.com/forum
Also i am getting following error in google if i connect the below link from google:

Code:

www.mysite.com/google-talk-71
Not Found
The requested URL /google-talk-71/ was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

It is an issue in .htaccess file.

Kindly help

ForceHSS 09-25-2012 10:48 AM

edit your htaccess file and remove anything do to with vbseo. Make sure you have also removed all the files from the db after you uninstalled the xml first
