There are no automatic uninstall scripts, you have to undo every step you did.

Do you know how to use phpmyadmin? It should be available from your site's control panel.

Run the following queries:

DROP TABLE articlebot
DROP TABLE articlebot_rss
DROP TABLE articlebot_rss_cache

then go into the 'thread' table and remove this field:

is_rss

Then look at the installation instructions that came with the hack and reverse everything that you have done.

Simplest way if you don't have too many hacks would be to re-upload un-hacked versions of the files changed in the hack.

Then re-apply any other hacks.

REMEMBER TO BACK UP YOUR DATABASE BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY OF THE ABOVE.

I know I am missing something small but I can't seem to figure it out. I'm getting the following error when trying to add a new articlebot:

Error: There is no user with ID of 0.

Thx

For a start you cannot have a user id of 0.

You have to create a user first then assign the bot to the user you've just created.

I have a registered user that I tried to assign the bot to, but I am getting the same error.

What is the id of the user?

Not sure if this has been posted yet, i'm pretty sure it has, but I don't have time to read 34 pages of messages...

Is there anyway to change it so that the forum the RSS Bot posts in, doesn't come up in the "New Posts" and stuff like that? Becuase the bot is spamming soo much, it's hard to see what has been posted by actual members of the community.

sweet thanks! Works like a charm... now i" just gotta edit vbadvanced to add that into the 'latest topics' and i'm pretty sure it'll be a simliar way of doing it. And the Welcome CP back in Vbadvanced... guess i'll do that at work today :)

thanks agian :)

Tenny 01-25-2005 09:20 PM

Well I found out in the vBa CMPS there is an option to exclude certain forums, so i did that.

But there still is one problem.

In the Template for vBa CMPS: adv_portal_welcomeblock
Code:

<if condition="$vba_options['portal_welcome_newposts']"><a href="$vboptions[bburl]/search.php?$session[sessionurl]do=getnew&exclude=113">$vbphrase[new_posts]</a>: $newposts        <br /></if>

Well I did the Exclude on the forum I don't want, but the $newposts is just a number, and I don't know how to exclude that. I wouldn't mind but for me I'm sitting there seeing there are 15 new posts, but when I click that, i only see 2 or so threads.

Anyone have any Idea's on how to do that?

No the userid, i.e. the number of the user.

yoyoyoyo 01-26-2005 03:21 AM

The bot seems to be working fine- great hack! However - it is only bringing back bits and not the full article:

http://img180.exs.cx/img180/7021/partialfeed9yz.jpg

How can I set it to post the full article, and not just the first part. Is that the RSS feed's fault, or is there a setting somewhere to allow it to post the full article?

Tenny 01-26-2005 04:12 AM

That's the RSS Feeds fault

poolking 01-26-2005 05:55 AM

The feeds aren't supposed to post the full article. You could be breaking copyrights if you attempt to post the full article.

I know that, but there is a different between a full article and a broken feed with half a post!

Did you know that you can turn searches @ http://search.news.yahoo.com into RSS feeds? do a search and then look for "View as RSS" in the right sidebar.

I've tried to get this to work, but if I try to add a feed it says "No file located at... whatever the url is"

Am I doing something wrong. I've put the url in exactly as it says and everything.

Basit 01-28-2005 05:58 PM

A Wonderful Hack :)

However for some reasons I found instructions a bit confusing specially those given in articlebot.php as remarks or may be I failed to figure it out correctly at first place.

Otherwise job weldone.

I think the cron job thing may a bit confusing to some people, but it can much more easily be set up in the "scheduled tasks" area of the ACP, instead of using the methods described in the read me. The other methods work, but I would think the first plan of action would be to set up a scheduled task via the ACP instead of using phpMyadmin, etc..

and I agree- excellent hack- I am having a lot of fun with it.

patriotcow 01-29-2005 03:38 AM

Hmm I have added this except it doesnt get the news. it just doing do anything

interfx 01-29-2005 12:28 PM

I have seen some examples of this script in use, but the forum post has the title, and a link to read more... (but not the full article)

Is there a way to pull the entire RSS article? and then have the link at the bottom? I did a quick search, but did not see anyone talking about this option...

Can this be done?

InterFX

as stated earlier in the thread, that is up to the feed provider. If the feed provides the full story then you can post it, but if it doesn't you can't. You are at the mercy of the feed provider in that sense. If you don't like the feeds, then look around, there are many feeds that do provide more extensive info than "click here to read the story!" :)

lebanon 01-29-2005 08:53 PM

i download this hack to try it out
all setup fine , added a cron tab , made a notify to my email to see when crontab ran.
here is what i get in email
X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.10
Set-Cookie: bblastvisit=1107038700; expires=Sun, 29-Jan-06 22:45:00 GMT; path=/

Expires: 0
Cache-Control: private, post-check=0, pre-check=0, max-age=0
Pragma: no-cache
Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1

My forum is still empty and didnt get any rss , i was tryin two different rss feeds
Wired rss feed and newisfree which was suggested by authos.
Any ideas ? I am having no error messages of any kind , just the forum that i specified to recieve posts is empty !

peterska2 01-30-2005 12:57 AM

A quick question as I've only just got round to installing this and 35 pages of posts is a bit much to read.

Can you set it to post in a particular forum? If you can then can someone enlighten me to how as there ain't nothing about that in the readme.

peterska2 01-30-2005 01:17 AM

OK I'm a dunce I just realised the setting is in the Add RSS screen.

OrangeFlea 02-01-2005 07:38 PM

Great hack.

I looked on the rss feed lists (both in the zip and link). Anyone know of a good one that focuses mainly on fantasy (games, movies, literature, etc.)?

Okay I have resolved this issue, however I am only getting titles in my feed? Anyone know how to get the bot to post the entire article?

Thanks

It all depends on the feeds. The point of the RSS feeds is usually to draw someone to the site where the news is posted, not to provide content to other sites for free. Some RSS Feeds are very thorough, but for the most part they are simply the headline, and a short blurb and a link to the article. If you are continually getting broken feeds, or partial posts then it is a bad news feed, and that is another issue, and it can be fixed by getting a different/better RSS feed

yellow281 02-02-2005 03:03 PM

Well all my feeds from various places (yahoo, blizzard etc.) display an initial title and nothing to click at all. I checked the feeds and many have descriptions too as well as links but my board is displaying nothing but one line of text and thats it.

I also wanted to import the World of Warcraft feed that displays posts from their boards but that doesnt display at all, though it doesnt display an error either.

Any ideas?

Thanks! :surprised:

Check the feeds in another RSS reader to see how much of the post is being delivered......

Or run them through www.feedburner.com and see how they are displaying.

I keep getting this error when trying to add abot, any clue what the fix is or reason for it?

Error: There is no user with ID of 0.

Its a member I created just for this

It's the numeric userID, not the user name.

dfdems 02-02-2005 05:05 PM

Firgured it out, user ID (#), not the user name..

You need to add article bot then give it the user id number of the user you created.

And now for me :) I had it working fine but since I've upgraded to 3.0.6 and reinstalled it all I get is
Error: There is no file located at http://www.wired.com/news/feeds/rss2/0,2610,31,00.xml
when trying to add article
