ouch. Our listings dropped too. From like 1900 to 568. I hope this gets better too. Does any one know why this happens?

FTDave 05-11-2003 12:21 PM

Hi.
This looks like a very good hack. I edited my config.php file. I uploaded all files in Ascii. When I try to access the archive directory I get the famous 500 internal server error. Where do I start to see what could be wrong? Could it be that .htaccess is not right on the server? Thank you.

FTDave 05-11-2003 12:28 PM

update.
I was curious so I removed the .htaccess file. MY 500 error went away.
It will show the very first page but when I click on someting it says page not found.

I guess I need the .htaccess file. :)
Anyone have any idea why I'm getting this error.
I ahve access to anything on the server if you have any suggestions for me.
Thanks.

FTDave 05-11-2003 12:38 PM

hmm?
I checked my server error_log and this is what it says.

[Sun May 11 08:33:49 2003] [alert] [client 205.203.167.5] /usr/local/apache/htdocs/forums/archive/.htaccess: ForceType not allowed here

What does this mean?

Xenon 05-11-2003 01:16 PM

it seems you are not allowed to use .htacces on your server..

FTDave 05-11-2003 01:34 PM

Hi. It is my server. Do I need to do something in hte httpd.conf file to fix it?
Thanks.
Dave.

FTDave 05-11-2003 01:43 PM

You're absolutely right. I checked my httpd.conf file and changed it to allow this then rebooted apache.

Thanks.

Xenon 05-11-2003 04:25 PM

:)
welcome :)

version2 05-16-2003 08:11 PM

Im getting a 404 error.

http://www.mysticwicks.com/archive/forum/2-1.html

And in the error log...

[Fri May 16 16:10:39 2003] [error] [client 205.240.74.14] File does not exist: /var/www/html/mw/archive/forum/2-1.html, referer: http://www.mysticwicks.com/archive/

:) What did I do wrong?

version2 05-16-2003 08:29 PM

Oh...and mod_mime is installed. :)

version2 05-16-2003 11:12 PM

Egads...is anyone still using this hack? Or am I the only one who has any problems left? :D

As for Apache2 Error 404s I don't know and am no longer bothered about ;) [/B]
Did you get rid of Apache2? That is what Im using.

version2 05-17-2003 01:08 AM

Well, THANKS for your help! :D

Just kidding. I fixed it and it now works with Apache2. You have to add this to your http.conf:

AcceptPathInfo On

Add this where you put all your AllowOverride stuff or in your VirtualHost paramaters. Enjoy folks.

http://www.mysticwicks.com/archive/

Now I just have to pretty it up.

CLicks INSTALL.

Please add me to the list, Xenon!

Before I installed this hack I had 200 pages in google.
After I installed the hack I had for 2 months 14.000 pages.
Now I have onlly 280 pages!
Why? :(

Guidster 05-19-2003 11:21 AM

If you look back a little bit, I posted that Google is flaky this month. Almost everyone that is listed is in an uproar. I do not have a single liting from my archive in the listing this month. I went from 2000 pages to 28. Gonna be a slow month I am afraid. I am ready for the next deep crawl to see what happens.

cnczone 05-19-2003 02:35 PM

Me to what is going on?

cnczone 05-19-2003 02:39 PM

How do you know when your being spidered?

Xenon 05-19-2003 06:49 PM

you can see a lot of googlebots in your who's online ^^

Guidster 05-19-2003 09:11 PM

There is also an application that is available from the Google Dance/SEO Chat folks called Google Tracker that can be installed to trace the path of the bot through your site...

There is always the logs to parse through as well.

gmarik 05-24-2003 11:13 AM

Wishlist:

I would love to have the archive working as for months:

August
September
October ...

Like a diary, get the point? Will somebody write it, I can't do it myself!!

Xenon 05-24-2003 05:19 PM

there won't be any added features to that hack by the authors.

gmarik 05-25-2003 05:20 PM

Xenon,

Who could do that then?
You're the boss over here...

Xenon 05-25-2003 05:45 PM

anybody who can code and has time and want to do can write that for you.
you have to find a coder yourself

zajako 06-04-2003 03:36 AM

i get 404 errors and mod_rewrite and mod_mime are enabled in apache.

any clue on why ?

Xenon 06-04-2003 04:12 PM

hmm, no idea, if you followed the instructions exactly it should work ..

zajako 06-09-2003 04:58 AM

i did follow the directions exactly.

Could it be a misconfguration of apache?

I run the server, and im still kinda new to apache, so it may be my error, but i did remove the comments on the module calling lines for apaches mod_rewrite and mod_mime .

it only does them on the forum and topic files.

Xenon 06-09-2003 07:55 PM

hmm i have no idea, sorry, i'm not good in those server things..

What is the offending lines of code? Other than your errors, the archive appears to be working fine. Could these be errors from included php code? Post the lines that created the errors as they may shed more light.

cnczone 06-17-2003 03:04 AM

The errors are different lines, their not the same ones. The hack has been working perfect for awhile than all of a sudden I get these warnings. Could my host have changed somthing on the servers or did I change a read write on a file?

Xenon 06-17-2003 07:36 AM

hmm i don't know but i remember i got some errors on a special host where an old site of me was located, which occured in a warning if gzip was enabled.

so have you tried to use a complete unmodificated version of our hack?
if yes and the error occurs, it's most likely a hostissu

Infopro 06-17-2003 04:09 PM

A few things I'd like to see added to this, or to the instructions anyway.
1) A few small details on how to make the archive look similar to your forums. I see many have done this. None have spoken up to help others. ie: header and footer
(I'm still tweaking mine so I can't comment on the best way to do this)

2) your on your archive main page ok, you click a forum. I want to center the "Pages: XXXXX" link. I can center Pages:1 ok, but 2345678 whatever, go back to the left side. I think across the top center for page links would be better. ;)

3) Your on a page of threads, or thread itself, it would be great to have a few more links up top, like, "Archive Home" or whatever, like the navbar on the actual forums.

I understand this is for google, but as someone else posted, some users are going to like using this if they are on dialup or just want to surf thru a bit faster.

Thanks for this, I think it's great. :)
It just needs a few more tweaks to be perfect IMHO.
Great job.

Here's link to add if you want.
(and for google to drop by our Joint after they hit this thread next dance LOL)

Aurore 06-19-2003 05:32 AM

What about the same hack for vb3!?
The one in vb3 does not work on certain site because PHP is compiled in CGI.

The one you made worked fine with vb 2.9

what you need to do is go into every script index.php, forum, thread and find

Code:

include "$archiveurl/header.php";

and

include "$archiveurl/footer.php";

and make them

Code:

include "/home/cnczone/public_html/archive/header.php";

and

include "/home/cnczone/public_html/archive/footer.php";

i know it seams crazy but thats what i had to do to mine for that error to go away.

Xenon 06-19-2003 06:53 PM

@Infopro: Neither Skuzzy or myself are adding Addons to this hack anymore...

@Aurore: hmm, normally it should work with vb3 also, just rename the functions into the new vb3 function equivalents, but maybe i'll port it over myself when i find the time :)
