i have installed this and it is working great, but...i dont want it to show on all pages, just on the forum home, which i have done...and also on the custom pages i have added using the article in the articles section. If i add the manual template edits to the custom pages, below nav bar and above footer, it does not show. Any ideas how i can manually add it to show on these custom pages (they are supposedly part of vbulletin according to the article).

Will Flash work within a side column (such as movie.swf)?

2dub 09-08-2008 04:26 PM

I'm having an issue I hope I can describe adequately:

Content from usc_block_1 shows between the header of usc_block_2 and the content of that block. I've attached an image if that helps.

peopleofcork 09-09-2008 04:20 PM

Does it work for 3.7.2 for anyone? I installed it on my 3.6.8 and it works perfectly but on my 3.7.2 it doesn't work at all - I don't see the side columns after the installation. Did I missing something?

I am having the exact same problem in my 3.7.3.

Ideas anybody?

Tigratrus 09-11-2008 05:59 PM

I think we had the same problem, and as I recall I had to modify the execution order of the things I wanted to display in the USC blocks.

I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE some "code snippets" of popular things you could put in the sidebar. Latest poll, random user, popular users, etc...

I'm sure others are looking for this type of thing. It would be awesome if we could organize it all in one place... PHP code to put in your sidebar for various cool features.

Any thoughts/ideas?

I know vBadvanced does this but with this plugin and pooling together our resources I think we can create a pretty darn powerful alternative.

Tigratrus 09-11-2008 07:13 PM

Well THE #1 thing I'd love to see (and I'm sure anyone else running vBlog) is the ability to display latest Blogs/Comments. I totally don't understand the apparent lack of understanding that visibility of new blog entries is *crucial* to the success of blogs on a site, but the way it is nobody ever sees the new entries unless they go *looking* for them, and that's a recipe for a dead blog system.

If anyone has any ideas on a block to show new Blog Entries/comments we'd be glad to subsidize development of it in any way possible. We've got the search integration working, but that only works for members (we restrict searching to registered accounts). We need something that's visible *all* the time the way we could when we used CMPS and vBlogetin, that worked great.

I am unsure what you mean be changing the execution order. Can you please explain?

Did you have to do anything special to make it work? I installed this according to the instructions, but I got nothing.

thompson 09-11-2008 08:30 PM

no nothing. only based on intructions

PGAmerica 09-11-2008 09:19 PM

Odd, so did I, but I got different results. Maybe I will reinstall it and see.

speedway 09-12-2008 08:03 AM

Great idea but a total PITB! Does anyone know how to bulk update ALL usergroup permissions to viewing the side columns? I have heaps and doing it manually will just preclude me from using this mod.

To be honest, I don't know WHY you would want to restrict a group from NOT viewing a column, isn't the whole idea to put a column on the forum for extra functionality? Restrict custom content YES, but not the whole visibility thing....

speedway 09-12-2008 08:08 AM

3.7.3 PL1 - Installed by the book and nothing, zip zero. I even changed the execution order to 2 to see what would happen....nothing. Any suggestions anyone? And yes I did allow my own usergroup to see the columns.....

"Fixed" it by editing the global_start plugin and removing the permissions constructs. Again, if anyone has a better way do let me know...

Thank you for this question. The instructions did not say anything about usergroup permissions. This is why it was not displaying for me.

griffinzx10 09-12-2008 06:36 PM

I havent installed this yet, so forgive me if this is in the software, or if this has been answered before.....if i needed to make graphics to put into these blocks, what size do they need to be????

Thanks

canadianrodder 09-14-2008 02:25 PM

Hi everyone, if you can help, I'd appreciate it. In IE, Opera (but not Firefox or Flock), footer info has jumped under the USC right column. See photo below. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks so much.
VBulletin version is 3.7.3. pl1

Also, for "Speedway": nice work on your site/columns. How do you get the space between column blocks (or is that vbadvanced?). I've tried to no avail...........Frank

Just a general idea... But most of the time when we see something like this displaying differently in IE and FF:

A) It's because IE is a pile of crap (I keed I keed! Well, actually no, IE sucks ;) )

B) More importantly it's possible you've got a glitch in your tags somewhere else in the page. I'd make sure to turn on the "Add Template Name in HTML Comments" in the ACP -> vBulletin Options -> General Settings then run the page in question though the W3C validator http://validator.w3.org/. Turn on all the options so you can see the source etc (and that's why you want the template names in HTML comments, makes it a LOT easier to track down where the problems are.

It's a major PITA, but keep hammering away at it till you get the page to validate and see if that doesn't solve your alignment issue, it prob will.

Depends on what you want? You determine the base width of the columns in the settings for USC, and if you put larger things (images) in, it will just make the column wider.

Tigratrus 09-14-2008 03:18 PM

Susan figured out a way to do this yesterday. I'll try and get her to write up a series of steps, but the basics of what she did was to use feedburner to grab the RSS feed from vBlog, then used feedburner's buzzboost to generate a code snippet that could be dropped into a USC block.

She did some tweaking of the layout via css on our site, but it WORKS!

Take a look at our forum for a an example of how it looks.

Hi Frank

I am not using USC anymore, that is infact VBAdvanced which is a temporary measure. I am eventually going vbDrupal/Drupal once I get things all working correctly.

Cheers
Bruce

Specifically, run the page through the validator, what "page". This happens to be the forum home page...............Frank

So navigate to your forum home copy the url from your browser, and paste it into the W3C validator and click the button to tell it to validate.

If you haven't done this before, be aware that fixing the validation errors can be a major pain, it'll probably take a lot of digging though templates, and it's not something anyone can advise you on via a thread, way to many variables. If you're not comfortable using Firefox+Firebug and reading though the errors, you might want to see if you can find a coder that's willing to help.

If you have the basic background and/or are willing to spend some time on it, it's really just a matter of keeping at it till you find the source of the problems. In general you want to try and fix the earliest errors first, as you generally get cascade errors where a badly formed tag causes a whole series of errors below it. Ads are also a MAJOR source of validation errors, they often have & in them instead of the proper escape sequence of: & (don't forget the ; at the end either!). Good luck!

James and Susan

canadianrodder 09-14-2008 03:48 PM

Tigratrus, found the error after validating. I had made a typo in closing the table tag. Duh. Also found a bunch of other stuff that I'll have a look at - not stuff that I had touched.

Thanks.

Speedway, thanks for replying.

Tigratrus 09-14-2008 04:24 PM

Gratz!

It's a handy tool... And it's amazing how few sites (even really big ones) bother to check that their pages validate.

Just throwing it out there again:

Are there any sample code snippets of cool things to put in these sidebars? Display random members? Display top posters this month? Etc... with avatars?

petacat 09-15-2008 02:57 AM

I did a search through the thread and could not see this mentioned...

Only think this mod needs now is to conditionally enable left and right columns per style.

Some styles have a column built in (often with the login there).

It would be nice!

PS: I think a lot of the problems people have with getting the columns to show in non-standard styles might be resolved by trying different positions under the Column start point option... It was useful to me anyway.

Drew Manzella 09-15-2008 06:35 PM

EDIT: Nevermind I figured it out which did bring up another question.

My BLOCK edits were done within a specific style HOWEVER the enabling of the column appears to be global so the current default template is showing the left column for the usergroups specified. Of course the column is blank because it isn't the style where I added the block code.

Is there a way to make COLUMN display style-specific?

Psylithium 09-15-2008 08:17 PM

Awesome Plugin, Installed.

Thanks.

Brother Malachi 09-16-2008 06:14 PM

After installing this mod, I tried moving the Login/userinfo bit from the breadcrumb to the side column...but for some reason it never shows the userinfo part..just the login form. How come it works fine in navbar but not in any other template?

hitmann 09-20-2008 05:22 AM

Anyone know what are the template edits to add the colums to custom pages?

zagman76 09-20-2008 12:05 PM

Is there a way to make it so that when a member scrolls down the page, the side panels follow them?

Guest210212002 09-22-2008 07:32 PM

Should probably toss a note about usergroup permissions in the install txt. :) Great mod, KA.

Guest210212002 09-23-2008 02:07 AM

More of a general CSS question I think but it pertains to this mod. I'm using right column only, forumhome only, and I'm using my own template edits so that the navbar and footer span the width of the page.

How would I go about getting the right column to have a height of 100%? I've tried setting it as a CSS class for the table and table cell, and plain old "height="100%" in the row, table and cell but it still only makes the table the height of the first row's contents. It's drivin' me nuts!

Also: To save me some headaches, if anyone's got this on the right side so that the WGO box is still 100% width (eg: the column is only on the right side of the actual forums) I'd love to know where you tossed the code. :)

ananth252 09-23-2008 03:11 AM

I have installed this mod and I can see the side bar in the most of the sking and couldn't see it in vbseo skin. Do I need to do anything? Thanks in advance.

Guest210212002 09-23-2008 01:08 PM

If you use the vBSEO skin, you'll need to do the template edits manually.
