I've never updated a style before, what's the best course of action to update the skin?

Reupload all the files via FTP. Go to import/download style, choose to upload an xml then merge into the appropriate style. Do that for each colour that you're using.

i just deleted the gray border around my forum but i want to change the height of the header frame (where the logo is) so it doesn't look offset. where can i go about doing this?

also how do i lower the ad in my header and change the color of the "Welcome" word next to the username on the top right in the navbar.

check out my forum to see what i mean about the header frame.
