i never invited them, just one day there was an inktomi crawler..

cklaszlo 02-10-2003 01:15 PM

@ SkuZZy --- Did you get my email? :)

Googlebot is going nuts. Most of our traffic is now comming from Google searches and users finding us via the archive. One reason I don't want to place too many pop-ups on the archive. Now here is the question of the day, and this might not be the right place, but, how do we convert guests into registered users?

FlyBoy73 02-10-2003 02:47 PM

Google just showed up on my site last night and has aprox 42-65 spiders running since that time. :) THANK YOU SKUZZY!!!!!!!!

FlyBoy73 02-10-2003 02:48 PM

What is the maximum number of spiders you usually see with Google? Inktomi blasted up to around 125 spiders.. I have about 50 on my site right now.

I've kept quiet about this for some time but after these comments I am going to speak. Throughout this thread you have interjected yourself, Tech. On no other hack discussion have I seen someone with a "competing" (similar) hack visit the others thread so much and make comments such as the ones that you have made on numerous occasions - arguing against SkuZZy's info in regards to Google.com inclusion, etc. Maybe your hack works and looks pretty.. Good.. Whatever.. But, keep it out of this thread.. That is just rude.
As for your differing opinion on Google. I did go over to searchengineforums and read, read, read and then post. It seems that SkuZZy is right on the money with what he has been saying.

bromyaur 02-10-2003 03:52 PM

installed and clicked install

thanks for the great hack, wish I found it earlier

http://www.graphicsteck.ca/vb/archive/

now to make it look pretty lol and get the proper links from my forum

cklaszlo 02-10-2003 05:31 PM

Google is hitting us again today with about 75 - 90 bots on average. Inktomi at about 30.

Xenon 02-10-2003 05:58 PM

@julius (and all others of course):
i've uploaded a new version, it divides a thread into 200 posts per page, hope u like it :)

Xenon, Thanks very much indeed! :)

Steve St.Lauren 02-10-2003 07:15 PM

I've installed this hack on our boards and I'm getting the forum list but when I click on the forum name then it just bounces to my error page (which is the front page of the site). I've added mod_mime and mod_rewrite to my httpd.conf and restarted apache so I'm pretty sure they are installed. Any way to verify that with a command? Any help would be appreciated.

Also, I have 56,312 threads on our site and I'd like to keep the loads off of our primary server (we get ~1,000,000 hits a day). I have a second server that is mysql slaved to the master so the entire database is on that server as well. Any recommendations on how I could change these scripts so that the actual information (mysql queries) come from the second server (which is on an IP address - no domain name) but it looks like it came from the primary server domain name. TIA

Xenon 02-10-2003 08:14 PM

hmm, weird.
are you sure you have placed the .htaccess right?
it seems that it doesn't run the php code just assuming site does not exists..

Javazoid 02-10-2003 09:01 PM

so you don't have to submit to inktomi? what! where is inktomi anyways.. inktomi.com ? you always have to submit other wise how they know your site is tehre, is it connect to google or something?

Steve St.Lauren 02-11-2003 12:15 AM

Yes, .htaccess is there - just verified that.

Steve St.Lauren 02-11-2003 01:03 AM

I figured it out - in my httpd.conf file AllowOverride was set to none for my entire htdocs directory. All I had to do was turn on AllowOverride for that directory and it's working now.

I could still use help on how to have it pull the data from my slave server but look like it's coming from the main. TIA

Xenon, it seems that google downloads twice the same page:

ex: for thread id 2000

.../topic/2000.html

and

.../topic/2000-1.html

Xenon 02-11-2003 10:53 AM

@Steve: good to hear :)
sorry but the second thing i couldn't answer i just work on one server systems and hav noe experience for you then...

@julius:
yes, but that shouldn't be a problem :)
it's like it here, too
you can call page 1 by adding the pagenumer=1 or just leave it alone on showthread...
if it really disturbs you, just put an -1 after the $threadid in forum. where the link is..

I put -1 after the $threadid in forum and the $forumid in index.php.
Thanks

I have this installed on my board. But the page numbers on top are placed BEFORE the <HTML> tag. They should be placed after the </head> and baseurl tags.

I don't think Google will follow the page links if they're outside of the <html> tags.

I would rather prefer to move those page numbers to the bottom of the page before the footer. Can you please tell me how to do it?

Also, how do I add the Meta Robots tag to all pages?

thanks!

cklaszlo 02-12-2003 01:45 PM

Googlebot has jumped again to the real forums. It looks as if the Archive jump starts google. Wierd. But its now crawling huge amounts of pages in the active boards. I hope it leaps to our main site soon.

Xenon 02-12-2003 04:44 PM

@fello9: hmm, didn't know that...
have changed the files a bit again now the page nav should be within the htmltags :)

if you dont have that, and you dont have for them not to follow, then the bots will asume you want them to index,follow.

julius 02-13-2003 08:40 AM

Is it possible in FORUM to add in
PHP Code:

<head><title>$title</title></head

the forum title?

Xenon 02-13-2003 11:28 AM

change $title into $foruminfo[title]

julius 02-13-2003 12:25 PM

Thanks!

codewebs 02-16-2003 07:14 PM

Maybe the spider is annoyed by the popups that are on your archive! :) Good looking archive. Have you submitted it again?

I have been so impressed that I uninstalled vBHome Lite in lieu of PHPPortal

julius 02-17-2003 09:45 AM

I hate Google!
I submitted the link to the archive to google and put the link on my home page.
After 2 days 50 google bot were on my site during about 2 days.
After 2 more days I made a search and Google returns me more than 1,000 pages (before were 190), with more than 800 from the archive.
Now, after 1 week google returns me only 191 pages, with only 1 (the main page) from the archive.

Why?

What you saw was called everflux. Your pages were only in google for a short time, then taken out. This is common practice. Your pages will be re-added again at the end of the month, this time permanantely.

Nice setup. It will spider you soon, chances are, it already has and you don't even know it. Watch for a bunch of your pages to be added next update. Even if google did spider you, they wouldnt be added until the end of the month during the "dance".

Steve St.Lauren 02-18-2003 12:48 AM

In installing this hack I noticed that the categories link to a blank page rather than just showing as a category. If you search through index.php for this line: (around line 82)

echo "<li><a
href=\"forum/$forum[forumid].html\">$forum[title]</a><br><font
size=1>$forum[description]</font>";

and change it to:

if ($forum['cancontainthreads']==0) {
echo "<li>$forum[title]<br><font size=1>$forum[description]</font>";
}
else
{
echo "<li><a
href=\"forum/$forum[forumid].html\">$forum[title]</a><br><font
size=1>$forum[description]</font>";
}

Then the categories won't show up as a link to a blank page.
