An update to this thread: Adobe has announced it will stop development of Flash, because windows 8 and Apple will not support Flash anymore. Adobe is going to focus on HTML5.

This means that all Flash based chat software will become useless in the coming years.

An update from 123 Flash Chat team: the HTML5 chat client development is well underway,
and we?re gearing up for a very exciting launch within the first quarter of 2012.

Thats very exiting news. 123 Flash Chat will get a modern revamp!
I hope that you will be using XMPP.

Its interesting to see that cometchat now uses XMPP and has a desktop client. It also offers APE integration which allows you to run your own network.

It seems much improved.

Please keep us advised. only, keep in mind a lot of us have no idea what an 'XMPP' is, or why we might want it. Ditto 'APE'. We're at the low end with a shared server and am currently using VSA Chatbox.

Yeah, you are right. I will explain why this is a big thing.

XMPP is a chat network protocol, also called Jabber.
Google Talk, Facebook talk and a bunch of other IM networks are XMPP.

A chat solution that connects to XMPP is basically your own IM network.
XMPP will allow your members to connect to your chat network through:
- IM messengers
- desktop client
- browser plugins

Effectively this means that you can keep contact with your members even when they are not on your site. And then all it takes is a notification or a chat from another member to pull them back onto your site.

Another interesting aspect of XMPP is that its performance is good. Its not without reason that facebook, google and other giants use this.

And off course you can connect your chat to facebook chat, google chat, etc. Which may be of interest as well.

AJAX PUSH Engine or APE is an awesome engine to PUSH real time data to browsers or devices. Think about mobile PUSH notifications that everyone wants so desperately for their mobile apps. This engine allows Cometchat to connect to basically anything without inevitably crashing your website.
When I say basically anything I mean mobile phones, tablets, gaming consoles, browsers, desktops.
More information here: http://www.ape-project.org/ajax-push.html

For APE you need your own server or VPS. But its also possible to use a hosted chat solution. Almost every chat provider offers this.

Regarding Pro Chat Rooms:
despite several requests for information about their product features, I received no answer from them in years. I had sent them specific questions which are important to vbulletin webmasters.

After trying again this week I received several rude responses, which in the end left me without any answers. I am not sure if this is consistent with their general support attitude, but if it is, then Pro Chat Rooms is to be avoided IMO.

Does cometchat integrate with vBulletin by default? Is there a plugin?

Also can I integrate it with more than one open source community solution? Im going to use wordpress for the main blog.

That was posted in late October, 2012. Things haven't changed much. I currently have 5 or 6 support tickets outstanding, none of which have been answered...

I will say one thing about ProChatRooms though, the source code is very open, although the internal commenting of it is quite poor. There is NO written documentation about it -- the only support I've seen is that it is "user supported." And not much of that, either.

I'm a 123flashchat license holder and it's a 100% rip off. Fees on top of other fees. ridiculous.
