Have you looked into how the remember me works to see if you could add the email address field to it? Since browsers can't do it, perhaps a setting to store it in the db or the cookie can be done.

I find the "short" way (first example) much...

I find the "short" way (first example) much easier to read and follow when looking at hundreds of lines of CSS. Of course the only difference is readability and page size.
