Links Break?

when users type in or copy and paste links such as:
http://forum.sitename.com/showthreadphp?p=1

it changes the links to:
http://showthread.php?p=1

why is that and how can i fix it?

that happens on all hyperlinks entered from the site.

there must be a reason for this right?
