Customized Profile Fields with usergroup permissions!!!

I asked for this is the beta stages of vb3.5 but they didnt write it in cant see why but hey im not gonna cry just wondering if a plugin could be made for it.

what it means is when adding a custom profile field you can assign which usergroups you want to see it / fill it in. hence for my purposes if a user is a band they will fill in custom fields relating to thier band / otherwise if there a listener they fill in fields about themselves

Would it be possible to set the custom field up and then modify the edit profile template with a conditional to only show the field to a specific usergroup?

Okay, several years later and I am also looking for this option. I think it can be done with a conditional, but I don't know how to do that. Or, if there is an alternat option, that would be great. I need to create a field accessable only to specified usergroups. Help?
