How about something that helps build the site's community? Make a hack that is customizable so that you can hold contests for users for bringing in users. Maybe options to allow you to set rules, how many referrals you need, how many posts a referred user must have in order to count as a true referral. A set time length... Things like that.

This would be a really good hack in order to build small communities.

A contest for driving in members would lead to negative publicity of your site even if that wasn't your intention. User wanting to win would spam your sites url even if there was a rule that it would get them disqualified.

So? Some people do that anyway. I would still like to see this hack made. You could add fields that would say who referred you and where you were referred from. For example, they could tell you they were referred from AIM, a website, or over the phone.

You can't say it'll be abused because everything has a way of being abused. That's just how the internet works. You just need to rely on those who are honest.

It would lead to alot of double accounting and negative feedback not to mention it doesn't seem that useful anyways considering an Admin can check referals and awards someone for getting X amount of posts if he feel it nessesary.

You have no idea how long that takes. I've already done a referral contest, but I had to do it all manually. Whereas a system like this can check all of that for you. It can run IP checks to see if they just made a new account. It can force a user to post three times before it gives a point to the user who referred them. There's a lot of ways to make it legit. Just gotta think about it.

To say this hack is bad or not necessary is idiotic. Especially for those who are just opening a site. This hack would be the best hack on their site.

What can easily be done is the one 3.5.0 existing hack where if there is a referral the field isn't displayed so the registering user can't wipe out the referer (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=98592).

On top of this a quick code in their User CP or something that just tells them how many referrals they've had and the URL to send people to in order to have them counted as a referal. Maybe have it go several levels deep for extra interesting statistics.

Add in the IP checker just to make sure that people aren't registering fake accounts to be a top referer.

Create a page that just lists users with high referal numbers.

Allow users to view who they've refered. On/Off option for this in admincp.

I really wish someone would make this. Me and a super mod were discussing something very similiar to this. I agree with everyone else here. Yes you can just as easily do it manually, check each referral. But its VERY time consuming. I would probably pay for a contest mod like this...

i guess a "top 10 referers" list used in conjunction with the built in IP address tracking and the AE Detecter mod would achieve this?

Guys, this has already been done. I have had this on my site for many months. I run referral contests all the time. It is awesome!
