even when I set the option to Click Not Required

You were having a problem with your avatars not showing either. 3.5 has MAJOR changes to the templates. Custom styles for older versions will NOT work correctly.

You need to create a new default vBulletin style. Eveything will work with that. Then modify it to fit your needs.
