how modular can we make hacks?

I'm wondering how modular we can make hacks? I know that things should be much easier now that we're dealing with template, but one thing I didn't like about UBB was that I knew that upgrading was out of the question, since I'd hacked my board extensively (I know I could have added better documentation though)

Can uber-hacked boards be easily upgraded with VB?

Unlike UBB, John seems to actually be interested in adding hacks to the core application.

So it's entirely likely that what you add as a hack in one version will be included in the next version anyways, removing the hack->upgrade->hack cycle.
