use vb's regiserter/member functions w/o using forums

i am starting a site that i anticipate will have a vb forum after the user base is of a decent size. but i just want to start off with the other part of my site for now for simplicity's sake.

i just want to here some opinions or experiences of using vb's register functions without actually using the forums. anyone done this? anyone recommend it? any alternatives to this method that would allow a fairly seamless switch to vb accessible pages later on?
