View Full Version : Its Real High Time vB.org upgrades to vB 3.5.0

Now that vB 3.5.0 is released, its real high time vb.org too upgrades its website. One of the major reasons is the newposts managmeent system. Presently, its very difficult to visit this website and review 250 posts in various forums at one strech. And, if in case you can not go through all posts or close down the browser or are disconnected, there is no way to review all those posts made since your last visit.. Neither there is any facility to view posts during last 2-3 days or last week or even last month. New version makes this task much much easier. I think vb.org should consider upgrading soon.

Enjoy!!

That's the reason we are waiting. :) He's the one who knows all the code changes done here and have been making the changes in a test 3.5 forum already. Plus we haven't completely finished the 3.5 hack database hack yet.

3.5 Gold came out earlier than expected, as I am sure all of us agree. :) Caught me by surprise!

We'd rather see everything working (and all the new features we want) on an upgrade, so that would include the hack database and many of the suggestions you guys made in the past week that we said we'd consider when we were upgrading to 3.5. :)

I look forward to it.

For me the most important thing about a forum is content. I use QR for 98% of my posts so Ajax here would be useful, but at the end of the day I am not really phased so long as I can continue to get hot mods.

Xenon - Admin on holidays ...
Tempted to try this at my site, but ...
- would I return?
- what state of affairs would I be returning to? :nervous:

I hope Xenon ports This (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?p=782099#post782099) to 3.5 first.

I can't upgrade till I've got this, and seeing vB.org in the same shoes I'm in makes me less envious ;)

Sorry for the possibly obviously silly question, but what is the database hack? I must have missed the posts about it.

I ran a quick search but nothing specific seemed to come up.

I would say that it is in everyone's best interest if the functionality of this site was upgraded in one swoop. That means style updates, code updates and new functionality installed. Then tested vigorously and finally you upgrade. vBulletin.com was easy to upgrade. It runs off of CVS and doesn't have any code modifications. On a larger site with code modifications, you don't rush into upgrades just because they are the latest and greatest.

No one tells anyone else when to upgrade their site, so why should vborg be any different? Please let them use their own good judgment to do what they feel is best for their own site. Does anyone remember the story about the rabbit and the hare? I'm sure we can all be a little more patient while they pull their act together and get all of their ducks in a row. Mmmm... duck. We have a testboard which is upgraded already.

Most vb.org hacks are working already, just 2 very important ones are not 100% finished yet.
After these two hacks are done, we will upgrade vbulletin.org

apart from some very small unimportant hacks you won't miss any features, but see some new ones ;)

...apart from some very small unimportant hacks you won't miss any features, but see some new ones ;)Very cool!

Any chance these will be made public? Or, like a Ferrari in a showroom, will we only be allowed to visit here and drool over them; never possessing them?

Edit: PS I like the style being listed in postbit on here. Is there any chance this hack will be released? I have found one but it seems to add a query everytime showthread.php is called, and hoped that your one might function differently.

I would say that they are creating and testing the hacks on a test board. Once they are happy there are no bugs in the new mods they will then upgrade this board and add the hacks and upload the style files.

Take your time.

It is one of the curses of the net.

Shops and help desks use to have opening hours. Didn't matter how large or small the company people were use to hours of operation. Now sites are online 24/7 and if people can't get what they want when they want it they get a little irritable.

I don't condone this mentality, but the more instant satisfaction that is provided the more will be demanded.

Well, that one isn't adding a query at all, but it's not a really well written hack. It's just a playing around with global variables in phpinclude, so all in all it's jsut a template change and the stylenames are all hardcoded..

ChrisShould take about 30 mins at most to get it online, you can prepare all the files beforehand, then just swap to them, and run the upgrade script. It should be possible to do everything else while it's online with the 3.5 files.

Actually vB.org has a duty to be on top of all code changes -- and in sync with vB.com. It's THE site for modders and stylists, THE front door for what isn't vB.com proper (with it's default skins/features).

It needs to be an inspiration and one that shows what modders and forum designers can do like nowhere else.

So yes, because the very nature of vB.org, folks here need to speak up and remind the staff -- where's the new vB version on this site? And when are you going to update the styles, too? Because you know even visitors hitting the frontpage will know the version isn't the same!

There are very few cosmestic changes between 3.0 and 3.5 - So "visitors hitting the frontpage" may be none-the-wiser ;)

Most 3.5 features are administration or posting enhancements, nothing more:)

As for our "duty" to upgrade - There are alot of modifications that people from this site want, and that this site needs to function - These are custom code that need to be re-written for this version, and that takes time :)

Not that it is a big deal or anything, but I gotta say, the length of time this is taking is perplexing from a Jelsoft marketing point of view.

1.5 months since Gold rolled out and how many months beforehand to work with the betas?

Perhaps the staff here should approach Jelsoft and ask for some assistance of some kind?

Chris M
11-12-2005, 03:29 PM
We have lives to live seperate from this site; We also have no need to upgrade just because the latest version rolls out of production...

We have many customisations to make and if we don't get them right in the hurry to conform to the latest market trend, we will get moaned at more for having errors and mistakes than if we take our time and ensure to the best of our ability that there aren't any...

It's not just as simple as "Upload new files, Use upgrade.php, Dance around for a while while it does it's business then return happy as larry and spread 3.5 Joy to eagerly awaiting people" ;)

It's more like "Download new files, create plugins, products and edit files to do what we need them to do, test them, test them again, try and break them, test them, upload them, use upgrade.php and wait for about 5 hours to get all posts and threads and users and this and that and the other updated, then upgrade current styles to work with 3.5, blah blah blah blah..."

It'll probably take somewhere between 12 and 24 hours for this site to be upgraded :)

And that's a low estimate ;)

We have lives to live seperate from this site; We also have no need to upgrade just because the latest version rolls out of production...Did I say anything about you not having a life?

At what point does that statement grow old? Is it still a good reason after 6 months? 1 year?

The fact that this new version was all about plugins and not having to hack core files and your assertion that this site has no need to upgrade just shows how far outta touch some of you are getting with the big picture.

I don't remember saying the upgrade here would be easy. I'm questioning now the seeming lack of preparedness for it and the "status quo" attitude. You guys need to be pushed now. Like it or not, you are a part of the marketing vehicle of a successful company. If you start to be a detriment rather than an asset to said company, well... let's just say that I would be a little more careful in stating "we also have no need to upgrade..."

We stayed on version 2 long after 3 was the gold release. We run many modifications here, some of them the public doesn't even see because they are tools to help the staff moderate the forums. All of these things have to work before we go to 3.5.

I asure you, we are not sitting on our collective butts doing nothing just to jerk around the membership here. Things are taking longer then expected, 3.5 came out sooner then we expected, staff members have had to leave at times over the last month or so due to unexpected illness in the family or work related things.

Marco, if this thread here is what is keeping you from upgrading this site, perhaps you should bring on more staff.

Brad, the point I was making is that it appears that you guys were not prepared 1 iota in getting this site turned over. From the first beta release, I thought you guys (or someone else) would be working on updating your modifications to work.

Why can't the staff here go without some of the tools you have hacked in here for a short period of time? Is the core software that deficient that the built-in tools can not manage a site like this? Why not bring on more staff to help moderate? With 100,000 members, it seems you are short-staffed anyways as I can only identify 4 or 5 moderators moderating on a consistent basis.

This is a site full of talented coders whom I'm sure would be thrilled in helping port over some of your special hacks. Perhaps you guys should ask them for help?

Cheers,

~Regs.

I say: let them do what they're doing and leave it at that. Surely, waiting several more weeks til they fully upgrade vb.org isn't gonna make things worse, right? I mean... sure, having quick editing might be great, but unless there's a timebomb that says "this forum will explode in 10 seconds unless you upgrade to 3.5", we should just wait it out the same way we all waited for 3.5 to be released ;)

How long for 3.5 guys????? Personally I`m lookin forward to you`s upgrading as the navigation around the hacks ain`t exactly at it`s best at the moment. Found it great on 3.0 because of the way it was laid out on ther forums so lookin forward to the hack dbase. But also it ain`t exactly a good advertisement for vbulletin when most people have upgraded by now and the official flagship hack site ain`t...

Not a gripe, this is an excellent site, just a general observation and question that I`m sure others must be wondering again by now.

@scioneffect: Thats because not all, but most run on vanilla vB install's, so it's much easier..here in this case, vB.org has custom code to convert over to 3.5, aswell as code new features into the hack's system to make finding certain modifications easier to find..

yeah granted m8 ..... Was just after a bit of info thats all ;) ...

its not an easy job to just upgrade in vb.org's case because they have alot of modifications made to it and nearly all of them will not work at all with 3.5 so it will take ALOT of work.

I have one which I plan to sell on ebay if your interested. It comes with a authentic captain VB decoder ring that I modded myself from the captain crunch original. Each are numbered from a set of only 100 that were produced. One out of ten are actually autographed by Boofo, which are inserted randomly.

I also have archive kits which will become available shortly. They include top secret vbulletin spy kit data such as:

Why cant I download anything?
Come chat with us in vb.org chat!
Wheres the hack database?
How much longer for the hack database?
Opps did I post in the hacks forum.

Well, we all have to have some pleasures in life. If that's flashing in public then why not? ;)

He gave three old ladies heart attacks, and made the gay nursing home carer get all frisky...

20 is a little old but being that the gender is a little off, kind of makes everything a little null and void...

Well that's all I can offer, either me or him. All my girlfriends are at least 24, so none of them will do for you.

And Kerry-Anne - I take it your IMs are offline? I've tried adding the ones listed in your profile but nothing... :(

Oh, now you didnt say anything about girlfriends. I am a little more interested now.

You can submit your application if you like. I will keep it on file for six months and if any positions become available, you will be notified.

Probably not TBH, as they have all got themselves good jobs in the city center.

I'll see if I can get my IM to log in. I guess I'd best update them in my profile too as I don't have ICQ or AIM anymore.

erm..................... I guess I need to visit the states and give the staff some incentives to finish it ;) :pThis has been a well-kept secret for some time, but I am actually also working on the hack db.
So Ill take that incentive now, though I have some requirements:

Must either be in person or through a pic/webcam session on MSN
If the latter, must contain at least 5 of your girlfriends
Must not contain more than 50 grams of clothes on your part, in total

You have -5 seconds from when your browser let 1 pixel of this post load to comply.
