View Full Version : Black and Gold 3.5
Andrew
09-28-2005, 10:00 PM
As promised I have ported over my popular Black and Gold style from vB 3.0.X to vB 3.5 and I have also made some minor changes to it. I received a lot of requests to apply the category spacing modification to the old version; however, due to time constraints I was never able to get that completed but have included it with this release (If you would like a version without this please let me know and I can release it as well.) I also modified a few of the images but the majority of them remain the same as in the previous version.
As always please let me know of any issues with the style - I tested it pretty thoroughly and wasn't able to find anything out of place but I have missed things before.

I think you forgot to upload spelling.gif to the editor directory. How can I seperate the Quick Reply BBCode Bar and the Quick Reply Form with a line? Like how the Quick Reply is here.

Heyas. Firstoff Great work on the skin/template! It's very similar to the old Solaris and subBlack templates I used to use on phpBB!
Anyway, just quickly installing and viewing on my "Area 51" test board, I noticed that a couple icons were missing. These are the editor/attach.gif and editor/spelling.gif (I haven't seen any others, but I haven't thoroughly gone through it either).
In the mean time, I've replaced them with ones that the "default" forum comes with. The spelling one is a bit hard to see, but otherwise :)
Anyway, again great job! I'm only on day 2 of owning vB and I'm loving it. Thanks for being a contributor!!!
Take it easy

Any chance of replacing statusicon/subforum_new.gif and statusicon/subforum_old.gif with something that works a bit better with the style (yellow, for example ;))? Other than that, no problems so far from me, and GJ.

Adnrew, I'm working on a skin, I was wondering if you'd mind giving me a hand (lead me to water). There are some code issues I have and the styles I have such a difficult time with editing.
I keep getting lost in the style manager and what exactly effects what. Sometimes I get it... other times I get lost and I can't figure out how to modify a specific part.
This is the skin so far.
I haven't started on the images yet, but know exactly what I'll do with them and how to apply most of them.

how do you install this by the way?
Andrew
10-05-2005, 10:39 AM
Here you go - This should give you a pretty good idea on how to install styles:
First step is to upload (via FTP) the images from this style to your website. Just overwrite my images folder to the existing images folder (It won't delete the old stuff - Just add the new images to it.)
Once you upload the images goto Styles and Templates >> Download / Upload Styles in your AdminCP.
On the Download / Upload Styles page click the Browse button next to "EITHER upload the XML file from your computer" and find the "black_and_gold.xml" and open it.
Finally press the Import button and it should do the rest of the work for you. If you have any other questions or can't get that to work let me know and I'll try and help as best as I can.

Very nice style. I won't use it on my site, but it made me smile. Very clean, nice antialiasing, and wonderfully crisp simultaneously.
Makes me think of bumblebees without the use of an egregious amount of yellow or striping that might drive the eyes bananas (thanks Gwen for the permanent spelling of banana that will never ever leave me alone...).
Well done.

It's currently in the works as are a couple of new styles - However, I've been swamped recently with some of my regulars needing their sites upgraded to 3.5 so I haven't had much time to continue working on them. I'll send an update to all the 3.0.X Edge users when the 3.5 version is released though.

An absoloutely awesome style and thanks for giving us the PSD options of customising :)
Just one quick query - when I try to alter the width to 70%, all the forums indent further, to around 50%, looks a little strange as the header and footer are longer .... any way I can fix this? Other than that, thank you so much for such an excellent piece of work!!!

You can set the width to whatever you want it to be in the AdminCP - Just go to Styles and Templates > Style Manager > All Style Options. On that page just change the "Outer Table Width" option to whatever you like - It can be any percentage or a fixed number of pixels. It's currently set at 70% as I was fixing an issue which caused it to display incorrectly at any percentage except 100.

I only changed the image path to: forums/images/bgold/misc/logo.gif

And when I remove the forums in the path, it works in IE and doesn't in Firefox.

You will need to run the installers for the hacks again to reinstall the templates - Most hacks include a feature in the installer to only install them. You can also just copy and paste the code from the old templates into new templates in the Black and Gold style - However, I think the first method I suggested would be easier.

I'm using it with phpportal. When guests view the forum home page, the forums don't allow the column on the left and drops all the way to the bottom of the page.
It works fine for people that are logged in.
Edit: I think it may have something to do with some of my forums being members only and this theme adding the private column which makes it wider.
Is there anyway to fix it?

You most likely will need the change the column span values in the forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost template (I think that's the right one but I'm not 100% sure on that.) It is only set to allow 5 or 6 columns wide at the moment (It varies because of the moderator column) - I think you'll need to use another conditional in that location to allow it to be 5, 6, or 7 columns wide.

Sorry for not responding to you about that - I checked the source files for my style and the images/misc directory from a fresh vBulletin 3.5.0 installation and those images don't exist in either one. I would try removing and reinstalling the style and see if that fixes the problem - Otherwise I'm at a complete loss as to why it would be looking for those images unless they are for a hack or mod you've installed.

It just appears that the forum is too large to fit so it is knocked down below the blocks on the left.

I have tried to install this style, and I believe I missed a step somewhere. I uploaded the images folder to my forum directory, then uploaded the xtml. I made the style active, but when I try to use my style dropdown selector in the forums themselves, it gives me an error. It doesn't even try to load the style. the icon on the bottom left in the status bar in IE has the "!" that is synonomous with microsoft errors. When I double click it I get an error message. See the thumbnail below. Did miss a step somewhere?

I don't know of any styles that use those images including the vBulletin default style. Unfortunately I am using one of my clients dev boards for workling on my styles until I can renew my license and download 3.5 - Because of that I can't link you to my working copy. Ever since I set this theme as my default, users have been saying that when they try to visit the site they're directed to www.mydomain.com/profile.php rather than www.mydomain.com/forums/profile.php
Is there a place in the theme that I could edit a path?

I don't know of any styles that use those images including the vBulletin default style. Unfortunately I am using one of my clients dev boards for workling on my styles until I can renew my license and download 3.5 - Because of that I can't link you to my working copy. However, with 80+ installs I am sure someone here has a working version that you could take a look at.
Well, you were right. Your style was not the master style, it was a child style and therefore picked up the mistake I had in the master style. I got it all resolved.
Thank you

Are you using vBAdvanced or another portal ? If sp can you check to make sure you have your paths set correctly - Also you might have to edit your navbar template to contain the full URL to your pages (I.E. - Change usercp.php to http://www.domain.com/directory/usercp.php)

In the "forumhome_fourmbit_level1_nopost" template you need to set a width="XX%" value for all of the table cells. If you don't understand what that is let me know and I will post a replacement template for you - I had someone else request how to do that as well.

I've noticed the "last post" area's are all different widths.
Can you tell me how to make them all the same so that they fit the widest title?
Andrew
11-15-2005, 07:09 PM
In the "forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost" template you need to set a fixed width for the last post column. I don't have the style installed on my new developement forums at the moment or I would give you a more detailed explanation. Let me know if that doesn't make sense and I'll try and post a new template entirely that you can just copy and paste.

Since I am interested in this as well, I looked at "forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost" and the only line I could find with last post in it was:
<td class="thead" width="175">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>If I change width="175" to width="500" there is no change. If change it to width="50%" all but the first forum are affected.
Is there another line that should have a fixed width applied to?
Lecter
Andrew
11-15-2005, 10:53 PM
In forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost find:
<tr align="center">
<td class="thead"> </td>
<td class="thead" width="100%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="175">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>
And replace it with:
<tr align="center">
<td class="thead" width="41"> </td>
<td class="thead" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="175">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead" width="60">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead" width="60">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead" width="125">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>
You might need to alter the individual widths to suit your forum, but for the most part this should fix the spacing problem. Please keep in mind though that if you have a thread title that is really long (Like a URL) it will still throw the alignment out of wack and that is unavoidable.

Yes - They can be used to replace the default vBulletin Post Icons and Smilies (Which are smilies as well - Just different ones.) The default vBulletin ones look horrid on a dark background - If you want to use them just overwrite the contents of the images/icons and images/smilies directories with them.

The "forumhome_forumbit_level1_post" and the "forumhome_forumbit_level2_post" templates are the only two that require a revert. As for the thread titles not updating - That sounds like more of a bug with vBulletin itself and not with the style. Might want to check vB.com to see if anything like that has been reported.

I had that same problem.
I fixed it by only allowing a certain number of characters there
vB Options -> Forum Listings Display Options -> Last Thread Title Maximum Displayed Characters
try setting that to something like 15?

That's the easiest way to fix it without getting messy with the templates, and the moderator column is an option somewhere within vBulletin itself (It's on one of the vBulletin Options pages, but I can't remember which one it is.)

Did you try the column alignment fix that I added to the style description ? If not, give that a try and it should fix the spacing issues. from the lastet download, you have already fix this issue in your xml...
so when i take a look your forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost is already change with your update..
here is i try to update the column fix:
<tr align="center">
<td class="thead" width="5%"> </td>
<td class="thead" width="55%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="30%">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead" width="5%">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead" width="5%">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead" width="125">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>
also in Main Table Width (StyleVar) i used 95%... it look perfect when our browser is 1024x728 also in Maximum Size condition, if you minimize the window (scroll min) the table will be mess up again..
i don't know what happen... still confusing right now..
Andrew
11-30-2005, 02:49 AM
I know I fixed the problem with the Main Table Width style variable - You should be able to put anything in there and have it work (Within reason.) Also - If the column allignment fix has been applied I can only assume that it's because you're allowing too many characters in the Last Post column. I tried to break it on my developement forums and was not succesful. If you want to - Send me a PM with a link to your forums so I can take a first hand look at the issue.

After you uploaded/installed your style in the ACP, you have to upload manualy the needed images. And then to make it show you can either set it as Default Style for your board, or if your users are allowed to select a style you should have a Style Selector Box at the lower left of your board.

Thanks so much Andrew, I've read the instructions. That's exactly what I did, and I did it again just in case and the light blue and white are still there. Some default colors are over-riding it or something.
Could this be because I have Vb 3.5.2 and the style is version 3.5.1 ?
or do I need to delete the default style or something? I do show both default style and Black and Gold style in my style manager.

There weren't any changes between 3.5.2 and 3.5.3 that affected this style, so even though it's a 3.5.2 XML file it will work just fine with 3.5.3. I will eventually update the XML file though, but I just had my wisdom teeth removed, so I'm a bit under-the-weather at the moment.

You would have to edit all of the images and the CSS to change the gold to pink. If you have Adobe Photoshop it shouldn't be that hard. If anything it's going to be time consuming.

I uploaded and installed this incredible theme a while ago for my site, http://www.controlbooth.com, and a couple members noticed that the grey thread status icons were hard to see against the dark background, so I edited almost all of the thread status icons in macromedia fireworks(except for the plain closed envelope, not really any editing to do there). I have uploaded a zip file with the edited images and the png files that I used to create them.
Here's a screenshot of what they all look like:
http://www.controlbooth.com/forums/images/bgold/statusicon/preview.gif
*note: the screenshot does not include the thread_new.gif image, I just forgot to include that in the screenshot :o
Cool - I considered redoing those myself, but business has been kind of hectic lately. If you don't mind I'd like to add them to the main distribution and add you as a supporter for the style. If you're cool with that I'll update the XML file to 3.5.3 as well while I'm at it.

That would be great! I would love to be a supporter. I have also considered changing the hot icons to images of flames atop the letter, but the results haven't turned out very well so far. Is there anybody else who wants to take a go at that?

If you're already running this skin on vB 3.5.3 you don't need to upgrade it since there weren't too many template changes that came about with the last upgrade.

I run bglold on www.westcoastbikers.com (http://www.westcoastbikers.com) - I am having users inform me that when they go to register or send email they cannot see their font. I investigated and it seems like it may be google tool bar and its autofill feature.
With IE and on firefox as the browser google toolbar autofill makes the background light yellow - very close to the set font color, so you cannot see it. This confuses people.
is there a script to disable autofill on certain form fields? or can I change the font just on form fields? Has anyone else had this happen to them?
Suggestions? :ermm:

It'd be awesome to see a 3.5.4 version of this, I tried installing on 3.5.4 and it came out all compacted, not stretched on the page like I've seen some of the other's installations. I'm not sure why it did that, but can anyone here show how to fix this?
Can someone with this working properly on 3.5.4 post some steps to get this working correctly?
And also... does this affect the 3.5.4 version at all since the templates might not be updated to any changes that might of occured within the 3.5.4 version?
Here's a screenshot of how my installation came out.

You can install this on 3.5.3 and 3.5.4 without any problems - None of the template changes affect any of the templates that I customized. I do plan on updating the XML file though sometime this week. I will send out an update once the new one is uploaded.
As for the width thing you just need to change the value for "Outer Table Width" in the Styles and Templates section of the AdminCP. A value of 100% will make it span the full width of the window.

I love this template, however, is there anything that can be done about the sizing of the last post column so that they are all the same sizing? Right now it looks kinda odd not having it all aligned.
Any ideas or fixes?

Your right, I noticed that also, I'm not sure if that was mean't to be like that, but it'd be cool to be able to change that to alligned, basically having some instruction posted for some users that would like to do so optionally.

Fantastic style, many thanks...
For some reason the bottom of my forum areas look like the attached picture. Can anyone advise what I need to check to remove the black row?
Thanks.
Edit:
Sorted, I found that I was missing the following CSS code from when I installed this on a test board...
.tfoot2
{
padding: 0px;
background: #222222;
color: #FFFFCC;
font-size: 6px;
}
...sorted! :)

I haven't tried this out on 3.6 yet myself, but I do plan on releasing a ported version once 3.6 Gold is released later this summer. I might try it on a test installation this weekend just to see how much is going to need reworked.
EDIT: I tried installing it on a localhost installation of 3.6, and at the first glance it is going to need some major reworking to be fully functional (Over 20 templates had major changes made to them.) I might just start over with a clean style once 3.6 Gold is released, but I will definately be porting it over (As well as hopefully releasing some new styles :))

Andrew, do you have a timetable for the 3.6 version of black and gold? I am hoping to update my site within the next two weeks before school starts and wanted to make sure that I could update the theme at the same time..

Yeah, I am interested in the update of this theme also. Our forums use it, and we won't be updating to 3.6 until we can get your theme working.
Thanks, and awesome job!

AdminCP, Styles, Upload Style, vola.
Also yes, the features are there, I have not seen any issues when I 1st, reverted all templates, then have it as a child style to my main style. Just keep the custom stuff, like custom common templates, main css and style vars, Everyone on the inside, can be set to child linking off your main. This way should you use alot of plugins, mods etc, it will all update without having to set them all up. =)
Some of my users and myself asked this..can you make this so it has a Blueish or purpleish color instead of gold? We LIKE the whole layout, but am looking for one in a coolish color vs gold. =)

If I remember correctly, there was a big difference in the phrases and config for 3.5.4 which required the full upgrade of 3.5.4 to use.

No I learned the hard way.. one time I went to install the AWS system... messed EVERYTHING up on my AdminCP, kept getting database issues etc.. messed up and just restored a 3.5.4 AdminCP folder to FTP.. made a mess of MORE things. Till I learned that OOPS.. 3.5.4 had some changes in there that was a required upgrade install to fix things, meaning before that was outdated stuff.

I think Ill goto 3.6.0 after the year gets closer to running out and everyone moved all the good well known plugins over and show its stable, Otherwise, 3.5.4 is nice and mods and plugins work well.
