This words are exactely, which I got from free forum developers, when I asked when some bugs will be fixed.
I soon after realized I need to move to paied forum (vB) to have full suport and out of the box product.
So, I wouldn't mind to pay for blog software, as our portal is sort of income, I just hate to wait.
I know exactly what you mean Sarthek. I like this free blog software also but it does not meet my needs. I need it so that journalist can have multiple blogs and will be able to edit there timestamp and would also like the journal to fall under different categories. I asked the developers of this blog software about these options and then said no they would not do this. I even offered to pay them to do it, but got no response. So I have hired someone to write my blog/journal software with all of these option and even many, many more options. I expect to have about one thousand blogs (I call journals) on my web site with in the next one or two years. I expect it to be up to about 8,000 within five years time if not less. Nothing against this blog software here, but I could not expect them to support free software and help you with any problems you might have when you have thousands of journals on your web site. You need software you can depend on and offers 100% support with quick response. So I had to go to a professional who will offer support when he was done. It is costing me a pretty penny to do so but that is what you need to do to get what you want and get the support you want.
As someone said “beggars can't be choosers”. That is exactly right. So if you are using this software you can not complain about it because it did not cost you dime. Another note is if you are using this software and you have a very large database of blogs and you have a major disaster and something goes wrong or the software does not support a large amount of blogs. You have no one to blame but yourself if something goes wrong.
The old saying goes something like this. “You get what you pay for”.
I am waiting patiently as my journals are currently being developed now.

maybe just disabling the hack wont do it, i think firstly it could be because your doing it on 3.6.0 but you say u done the same on 3.5.4, I think you need to get into your myphp section in your mysql db and drop the relevant tables and start over again. But you should have backed your things up before you even started to uninstall and reinstall.

Indeed.
From our prospective, I would give a second tought beetwen vB and IPB if I had to choose again, as they have blog component, for payment though.
Third party software is not an option, neither free or commercial, as it's not much user-friendly, if guests are to be registered twice or more for different parts of portal (forum, shop, blogs...), and not with only 1 ID.
Please inform me asap, how long are blogs expected to be in dewelopment, and what is the price? Perhaps we could split it.

I need help. I've been using this hack since it was first released for vb3 and so my users have accumulated large amounts of posts in their journals. The problem is that regardless of the pagination, the larger their journal, the longer it takes to load and the heavier it is on server resources. For some users, I click on their journal link and come back 5 minutes later. If enough people are browsing journals, it brings my server to its knees. This isn't how things should work.
So, I'm faced with a decision - either clean up this hack myself, or find a new way for users to keep journals. Has anyone had to do any work on the queries to make them more efficient? Please please help!

06-15-2006, 04:18 AM
Ok I fixed the problem. The issue was not the query itself, but the database structure. The install script does not set up proper indexes. If you want this mod to run faster, you need to set up an index in the journal_entries table for the journal_id column.
I would also suggest setting up similar indexes on the other tables, as they are also lacking.

To reiterate what I said eariler, there's an issue with the bitfields_journalhack.xml file that causes the error in adminfunctions_options.php. Because of that, having the journal enabled causes such things as bbcode to not function, so I've had to remove the xml file for now until a fix is released soon.

Yeah, having the Journal enabled on 3.6.0 also causes a problem with about 4-5 vBulletin options where multiple checkboxes are listed for the admincp>vbulletin options (such as bbcode, image verification options, memberlist field options, active members options, etc.) Disabling journal allows those fields to appear normal once again...

You'll need to go through your templates with a 'fine tooth comb' and check that every 'opening tag' has a closing tag and that things are closed in the correct order.

I'll do that again, but I just copied and pasted it from the code up provided. dunno why it wouldn't work. I didn't change anything.
this is the exact code I used (several different places -- still nothing)

You'll probably find that the problem of a missing opening or closing tag is elsewhere in the template. Have you tried running the page through a HTML validator such as http://validator.w3.org/

I'm sure he's okay, he's kept busy nowadays as a new programmer for Jelsoft.
I hope he still updates this, the majority of people who go to work for Jelsoft end up not doing much on the modifications end here anymore and that's unfortunate but expected...

One of the problems I have is there are no options for Admins to moderate journals.
Only the journalist can edit and delete their own journal entries/journal.
Looking back this thread, or in the AdminCP, theres not even an option for admins to "edit other journals".
Has development on this stopped ? If so, would there be a solution to allow Admins to moderate other journals ?
We are on version 3.5.4, journal version 1.0.2 Beta 1

Hello,
How do I cause the vBjournal link to show up on the nav bar for unregistered users? I want unregistered visitors to the site to see that there are journals so that perhaps it will help encourage registration.
Currently, I added a link myself over in the left hand column but I would rather that it show up on the nav bar instead.
Sincerely,

Hi Everyone,
It's been fixed by one of my Admins. He made some changes to the journal.php file and commented his hack (search for "sn hack" without the quotes) of the code. Feel free to replace your journal.php file with this one. It should work. To the author of this hack, feel free to make use of the code changes, although you may be able to clean it up (not sure. This was done rather quickly, so it could be a quick and nasty).
I make NO guarantees, though. Please make backups of your DB and whatnot. I accept no responsibility for the changed file and offer no support whatsoever.
Firestar.chkn
07-11-2006, 12:42 AM
alright, sorry. It's not completely fixed yet. Still working. The permissions are all messed up, and bbcode also isn't being parced in the journal entries.
At least the journals will display now, and people should be able to update it. Everyone that should have access to it in the admincp may not, though. Also, some functions which may reply on the permissions (for example moderating a journal entry) may either not work or produce an error. Will feedback when I have more news.
Firestar.chkn
07-11-2006, 12:46 AM
ok, sorry. It is fixed :D The permission problem "seems" to have been fixed by someone updating the usergroups' journal permissions, as well as updating the journal settings.
This effectively recommitted the data to the DB, fixing the problem... I think. Perhaps someone can test it and see if it works?

It's a journaling system where each user can type journals for themselves. It is similar to LiveJournal and those.

Hi Alien,
It's by no means anything official. I don't mean to step on any toes either. So please forgive me, Andreas.
We are running it perfectly fine on our forums with only one change, and that's the file that I attached a couple of posts back. Just upload that and overwrite your existing one, and it should work. Obviously, you may have to apply your templates again.
It seems there were a few other things as well, which my Admin had to fix, but most of them were minor problems. If you have any major issues before Andreas changes this to become 3.6 compliant, feel free to ask and I'll get my Admin to reply here, or ask him what he did to fix it.

I accept no responsibility for the changed file and offer no support whatsoever.
thank you so much :)

Ahh, so this is what breaks the bbcode... Our bbcode also didn't work.
Just install a new style from your vbstyles.xml file that came with the installation (it's in the install folder of your vb 3.6 download). Then create new bbcode templates. They've been deleted by the vbjournal hack then. Or so I think, in any case.
If you replace the templates, it'll work again.

I installed this hack but when I try to go to 'Journal Index' or 'My Journal' it says that I don't have permission to access the page. I am logged in as the admin but it says:
Admin, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

I got this up and running (vB 3.5.4) and it all seems to be working fine. I have imported all my user data from an old forum (YaBB). My question is - how can I import my user's existing journals? (I modified the YaBB "Home Page" mod to create a simple journal) They are all in text format on the old board.
What I need to be able to do is simply to create a journal for some of my members, and then I want to be able to just paste the old text in there. I can do this individually, since there are only about 30 member journals so far. As admin, I can't create a journal for any user other than myself, and I can't edit the contents of any member's journal.
Any help appreciated - I can figure out a lot of things if I just know where to look.

Does anyone know how to get username changes to reflect in the journal? I tried running the update counter maintenance, but that didn't seem to do the trick.
I looked at the templates and it looks like they call the usernames by $journalinfo[journal..] insteaf of $userinfo[username]. Is anyone capable of writing a plugin that would enable the $userinfo and $post codes to work? This would fix the changed usernames..

alright, sorry.
Hi! Thanks for your upload. We were able to fix the permissions and the bbcode issue here is our fix, so far the site users are not reporting any other journal issues.

Oblivion Knight

No, it doesn't contain a fix for reporting journal entries as I've never looked into it. It's something that AN-net had in his original version of vBJournal I believe, and Andreas ported it over though it's always been commented out.. I may take a look at it and see how easy it would be to integrate fully, and have it working.
What bugs are people experiencing with permissions? At first glance, I haven't found any and none of my users have reported anything out of the ordinary.. Again, I'll take a look at it if you can guide me as to what specific problems there are.
Neo_obs

well there are permissions which are commented out wondering if you got those working.
Also about the reporting I just uncommented it and it sends emails to all my staff so it works for me on 3.5.0( I think I may have had to change a line of code here or there) wasn't hard to figure out something as easy as the [visit x's journal] problem

Hey oblivion, can you fix the way the journal calls on $post[username]? When you change a user's name manually, or if you allow the "change username" hack, the username in journal doesn't update, though it works throughout the site. I think when I used to use vbjournal, it called on $journal[userinfo] or something, which is the probable reason for not updating.

I searched the template "journal" and the only area with the word private is below

I attempted to make it look like this:

I have no problem with your terms.
Oblivion, you porting this for 3.6.0?Yes, it will also fix many bugs with the current version and be compatible with PHP5 and MySQL 4.1. Although the current zip with a slightly edited journal.php file posted somewhere in this thread, should work well enough on vBulletin 3.6.0 as it is.. :)

I have a couple of real important features I'd like to request :
1) image attachments. We have people keeping journals of their home theater builds but they can't attach images, so they have to do it in normal threads. This is *such* an important feature.
2) Conversion of a normal thread into a blog entry (and back?). This will enable us to 'import' existing journal type threads into the vBJournal system.
And being able to convert journals back to normal threads would, of course, make it easier to uninstall at any point.
Thanks for your consideration.

I keep getting the query error and I'm not sure why? I installed the lurnal on a clean install of 3.6 and all looks OK, but it says I do not have perpission to enter, I must have missed something?

BTW, has anyone succeeded in getting the journalpage template looking like blogger.com ?
I'm getting close but the footer is still messed up :(
EDIT: Wee! Aurons Ghost fixed it for me. It is now a faithful copy of Blogger.com's Sand Dollar layout. Get the templates below :D
http://eternalspira.ffproject.net/journal.php?do=showjournal&j=1
Due to the ammount of interest, here are the templates. Enjoy!
After downloading do this:
1) Add 1 template: Bloggersidebar, with whatever you want under the avatar on the sidebar. My Bloggersidebar.tpl has the example I used.
2) Modify 2 templates: journal_entrybits and journal_journalpage, just paste the contents of my tpl files to replace the entire template, for each of the two.
3) Add some custom CSS
You know how to add custom CSS ? It's on style manager, right by the "Go" button, use the drop down menu instead of just using "edit template", select "Main CSS" and on the main CSS screen scroll down to the very last box. Paste the contents of my "customcss.css" file there.

Err.. found a tiny bug in this version.
Did anyone here try to delete a mood already ? I did and it gave me an SQL Error.
Easy enough to fix though:
On journaladmin.php
Find
// ###################### Start killmood #######################
if ($_REQUEST['do'] == 'killmood')
{
$vbulletin->input->clean_gpc('r', 'mid', TYPE_INT);
$db->query("DELETE FROM journal_moods WHERE mood_id=" . $vbulletin->GPC['mid']);
Replace by
// ###################### Start killmood #######################
if ($_REQUEST['do'] == 'killmood')
{
$vbulletin->input->clean_gpc('r', 'mid', TYPE_INT);
$db->query("DELETE FROM ".TABLE_PREFIX."journal_moods WHERE mood_id=" . $vbulletin->GPC['mid']);
The only change was to add a TABLE_PREFIX to the SQL statement
I also made a plugin (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=125878) to add most of the the journal CP to the Moderator Menu, since I don't want to be hassled with adding moods! :P

I would personally search for every occurance of "$start,$perpage" and replace $perpage with the number you want. I'm not sure how the settings work - and that would bypass the (not working) settings and use the value you enter.
Once a valid fix is released you can just download a fresh copy of the file.

It looks normal in 1600x1200 with the above modified JOURNAL template. However, moving down smaller resolutions crushes the fist column again. I tried 150 (pixel) and tried 15%, 12%, same problem. Why?

Hi, my queries did not run so i was going to run them in phpmyadmin but i am unsure what syntax to use> currently it is for example:
$db->query_write("
CREATE TABLE " . TABLE_PREFIX . "journal_comments (
comment_id int(10) NOT NULL auto_increment,
journal_id int(10) NOT NULL,
entry_id int(10) NOT NULL,
commenter varchar(50) NOT NULL,
commenter_id int(10) NOT NULL,
comment_title varchar(100) NOT NULL,
comment_text text NOT NULL,
comment_date int(10) NOT NULL,
ipaddress varchar(15) NOT NULL,
PRIMARY KEY (comment_id))
");
But i do not think that is right for manually running the query. If someone could supply what the above should be i can mimic it to the rest. Total mysql noob.
Thanks!

Anyone know how to fix that width problem in first column, or perhaps replace it with icons instead?

Hi Everyone,
It's been fixed by one of my Admins. He made some changes to the journal.php file and commented his hack (search for "sn hack" without the quotes) of the code. Feel free to replace your journal.php file with this one. It should work. To the author of this hack, feel free to make use of the code changes, although you may be able to clean it up (not sure. This was done rather quickly, so it could be a quick and nasty).
I make NO guarantees, though. Please make backups of your DB and whatnot. I accept no responsibility for the changed file and offer no support whatsoever.
Thank you very much for the fix.

Pleasure Guys.
I'm now getting another error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_PRIVATE, expecting ']' in /var/www/forums.prophecy.co.za/journal.php(567) : eval()'d code on line 188
Can anyone help with this error? If not, I'll get someone to try and look at it and post the fix here. I'm not getting SQL errors... yet :(

3.5.4 user here in need of help.
For some reason, the journal.php page, specifically the table under "Journal / Journal Description," it's very hard for me to see the words. The table is grabbing the wrong background color/scheme or something. Here's a screenshot:
It is not recommended to use mySQL 4.1+
They are probably all using MySQL 5 :rolleyes:
Is anyone running this with PHP 5 and MySQL 5?

Help me out with my problem, guys. I know it's just a tag issue, likely alt=1 or alt=2 or something. Can't launch this thing without this minor problem being fixed.

from what i've heard it runs fine on 3.6.1It doesn't appear to - I've just upgraded a site from 3.5.5 to 3.6.1 for someone and Journal fails with the above "Divide by Zero" error.

The pagination settings are totally shot for some reason. So total records / pp, and pp is 0, you get the error.

For some odd reason, NONE of the options show up to me in usergroup permissions. It used to work for me in the 3.5x set, but once I went to 3.6.1 and enabled it again (and even uninstalled and re-installed from scratch!) the options do not show up inside the usergroup manager..
I checked with a fresh install on a board that has never had a hack period and it works fine. However I did a direct comparison between the database entries on the unhacked board and the database entries that were added on my hacked board and they are 100% the same and it's driving me nuts. :) The script works, I just can't turn on permissions in the per-usergroup manager.
...and yes, I'm using the updated journal.php file.
Any pointers? :) I've never seen this happen before...

Try rebuilding bitfields (debug mode).

Okay for the most part I have mine working just fine on 3.6.1
I thought I had it all done and such, however, I just noticed that none of my admin cp controls work for the journal settings.
Any ideas?

Comments from some members arent showing up at all - but from most members they are .... any ideas why that may happen ?
The name appears , and everything else , just not the actual comment ... happened to myself as admin on one or two journals.
is there a fix for comments?
