Well my first suggestion is to make your own custom skin, and it individualises your forum and makes it more appealing to members.

Skins are highly overrated. If you look at some of the huge forums out there, they have basically the default vbulletin skin with different colors and an original logo.

Content and interesting posts is what is going to keep people coming back and posting. You have to give them something worth talking about.

www.extremefitness.com that is a prime example, the board looks great, photopost installed, plenty of template mods to make it very attractive..but its a $20 skin from extremepixels, look at all those members 0_o. Its not ALL about the looks, just have great and "unusual" content.

very good example Curt...and good advice from both you and Amy. If you want a different look and can find it for a low price you are well advised to do that, but the content and sense of community is what really makes a site!

ExtremeFitness is my site - I purchased the power pack (or whatever they call it) with copyright removal from ExtremePixels and offered 12 skins at one point to my members (12 more as each skin had "large" font versions). Maintaining that many skinz was a real pain.

I've been looking into custom skin development, but really like the skins I'm getting from extremepixels. When 3.5 goes Gold, I'll look into my options, but in the meantime I'd highly recommend the stuff from EP, easy to install and looks great.

Not really. The look of your forum is a first impression on a new member. A default scheme won't do it much justice. It doesn't have to be some super image complicated scheme, but at least a colour change would do something.

Heaps of forums use the default scheme and change nothing, so it's best to individualise yourself from them.

I did say different colors and an original logo :) Those purple forums with the vbulletin logo still on them make my left eye twitch.

Ooops, didn't see that part. But you're right, you don't need a complicated template-looking forum to attract members.

So basically, I should make my own layout or edit one of the ones I have already... that doesnt seem that hard.

About the content on my site, what do you think?

You need to make the concept of your site clearer. Is it a general discussion forum?

Its Alien Entertainment; videos, music, flash games, etc. Does that bring the concept to the first time guests?
