View Full Version : A few questions before I order

I posted a similar post the the other forums, but was told to ask here...so here goes...

1. I am migrating from MWP (maxwebportal 2.11) and need to make sure I can import all the users, posts, private messages, profile, etc. I saw the importer for snitz info but I'm not sure it would work. I could not find a way to submit a test sample on the Admin demo. This is a critical item for me as I have a 25,000+ post / 100+ member mwp forum running. (edit-more info) The site is an access database. I saw the list here, but maxwebportal was listed as the first unhyperlinked. I'm guessing this means it isn't available.... I still wonder if snitz importer will work...?? (end edit)

2. Is there session information available to a custom asp script (logged in status / name / rank / etc)? I have several custom web applications I currently use and would need to have this to authenticate users (so I don?t have to twice).

3. Can you run .asp scripts from the scheduled tasks page?

4. Assuming I purchased the 'owned' license today, and three years later version 5.0 is released - I only have to pay $30 to get the latest version...right?

5. I got this error magic_quotes_gpc should be off for optimal performance, ask your host to change this in php.ini on the vBulletin 3 Test Script. What does this mean, and is it worth bugging my hosting provider to change it? (I'll ask them to do this - but I still don't know exactly what this means)

6. ?database_conflicts.php? would not run on my hosted environment. It threw up an error. Is this an issue? (they said not to worry about this)

7. Is there anyone who has converted from mwp / maxwebportal with a success story?

hi,

Well i'm verry sorry man but what you want is impossible with vbulletin and let us clear up a few mistakes here.Vbulletin a 100% pure PHP/MySQL application which means it doesn't run .asp (it also means NO access databases)

the licence issue yeah i think so if you have an owned licence you only need to pay the $30 download access if that's expired when a new version comes out that you want(save your logininfo so you can confirm who you are if *vbulletin* asks for it)

max web portal i don't think that's supported

I also have a few questions before I purchase.

I want to have a website which will also need members registration and inside my website, I would like to have a forum.

What I want is also for the members to log in into my website to be able to access the info there, like a member's lounge which will include the forums. I don't want to have another registration into the forums and another seperate logging in.

I have written to vBulletin Support and got this reply so that's why I'm here.

Integrating vBulletin with a non-vB member system would require a
rather extensive modification of the code. Of course, we cannot provide
official support for code modifications. What most people do is modify
their current system to use the vB member system.

Either way the place for help with this would be over at the mod site:
http://www.vbulletin.org/

Once you register you can post in the Pre-Sales forum there.

Is there a ready made system which uses the vB member system whereby I can purchase or something like that?

I have not purchase any web hosting services yet as I want to make sure of all this before I do so.

By the way, I'm not IT savvy so I won't know how to do it myself. I'll be engaging a web designer to do up my website.

There are a few (payed/free) modifications available that let you integrate non-vB pages with the vB member system. For example do a search here for 'portal'.

For custom work you can always request help from other members (free advice or payed work).

If you have any more specific question, feel free to ask them.

Looking forward to welcome you as a full member after your purchase.

I have gone through Subdreamer (http://www.subdreamer.com) and it looks impressive and can be integreted with vB whereby, the member registration system from vB will be used. But I need certain clarifications.

1. For my website, I need certain information from my members during registration which includes, name, date of birth, sex, country. This information is not optional. Does the vB system has this in their registration? If not, how do I go about overcoming this?

2. When we say the the system is integreted, would it mean that when a member register and there after log in into vB registration, they are also automatically registered and log in to my website (assuming subdreamer)?

3. After a member login, is it possible not to have the forum as yet in my website until a later date assuming I purchase vB and integrate it with subdreamer anmd use the vB registration system?

Also, who can I refer to for assistance? I don't mind the payment if it is reasonable. Or can you or anyone me some website/webhosting comapny that already has vB member system?

Thanbk you very much for your assistance.

1. vBulletin offers 'Custom Profile Fields'. These are admin defined fields in the user profile. You can set if they are optional, required or required only at registration.

2. I can't give a generic answer to that, but i would say that is the minimum integration you would expect from an addon/hack.

3. If i understand correct, you want to use the vB user database for your main page, but you don't want to show the forum yet? If this is what you are looking for, then you can just not gove the link to your forum and set permissions not to allow any forum for regular members.

About assistence, this will depend on the modification you will be using:
- General assistence with vB by Jelsoft Staff comes with your purchase
- Most coders of modifications will give support of their work free of charge here on vbulletin.org, some will be more active then others. You might want to check the thread about the hack to see how good the hack is supported by the author.
- You can always post general questions here, most of the times someone who knows will try to help you
- You can post a Service Request for payed help with all aspects of running and maintaining your board here in our Service Request forum. You will have to negotiate a reasonable price.

Hope this answers your questions.

Thanks Marco,

One more last question.

Does vBulletin comes with hosting plans?

Thanks

wow.

My little post that was completely ignored for almost a month until Delphi bumped it has had all sorts of new directions. :surprised:

Anyway...I went ahead and bought vB anyway. Maxwebportal is supported, but the import was a pretty horrific three day experience to say the least.

I did find a way to integrate my asp programs into vb by using vba. It actually was relatively easy and works well.

No Jellsoft does not offer hosting you just buy a licence which grants you the right to use vbulletin

OK now that I more or less understand, please correct me if I'm wrong or assist me in the process.

I intend to have the following.

1and1 web hosting plan.
VBulletin
Subdreamer

First I get a webhosting plan.
Next I purchase vBulletin (sorry for the stupid question, how do I upload it?)
Then I purchase Subdreamer (May use the Lite version before upgrading it to Pro as want to make sure it is necessary since I find that 1and1 also has webbuilder, etc but doesn't know whether it can be integrated with the forum)

Then I design my webhome page with a click function button to go to registration for members using vBulletin.

Pardon me, I'm a bit ambition but I like to get it right the first time.

Or are there any recommendations as to other hosting, webbuilders, that are better with vBulletin?

Reaaly appreciate all the assistance here.

I can not really comment on your choice of host. You might want to have a look at webhostingtalk.com first, there you will find a lot of info about the experiences others had with webhosts.

Subdreamer i also can not comment on.

You will in most cases upload the vBulletin files using a FTP-client. You might want to create a new folder (for example 'forum') to install vBulletin into.

Sorry guys, I'm really up to my wits. I have also posted for assistance in Subdreamer and the recommendations are different with regards to hosting plans. So I did a check with web hosting reviews which again give different recommendations.
http://www.10-cheapwebhosting.com/top10hosts.php

I will appreciate it very much if someone would recommend me a good hosting plan/source that will go well with vbulletin or direct me to a thread here?

By the way, I was thinking of subdreamer because of its receoomendation in one of the threads here. What I want is a "web-builder which can integrate vBulletin and apparently, subdreamer has that function. Unless someone here can give me some guidance to any specific thread where they discuss good "web builders" that has ready-made integration with vBulletin (surely there must be one?)

Frank answers and assistance really appreciated.

Thanks

I didn't give any recommendations on a good host, so please explain what was different in the recommendation by subddreamer?

Please note that webhosting is like real life, you will get what you pay for.
