View Full Version : Installed vs. Currently Installed hacks

I think the "Installed Hacks" feature is great, but could use some embellishment to make it more useful.
Like others I do not click "uninstall" once I have removed a hack, if it worked but it did not suit my needs. I like to click on installs that worked as advertised, to show my support for the hack authors, however the list is useless to me when I go through it to try to figure out what I actually have currently installed.
I would like to either see the "hacks installed" list sortable by the date you clicked "Install," or better yet have checkbox column that would appear on the list of installed hacks, with each hack listing, and you could click in the box if it is "currently installed." The checkboxes would have no affect on the HOTM, or number of installs- it would just be for the end-user to keep better track of what they have installed currently.

I like the idea of a checkbox column whenever you view your installed hacks.

IMHO it would be a better Idea to click Uninstall when wou don't use a Hack any longer.
Doesn't make sense to keep it listed as installed, doesn't it?

Doesn't make sense to keep it listed as installed, doesn't it?I think it does make sense. I really appreciate the talent and hard work of most of the coders here, and I like to show my appreciation for sharing their hard work by clicking install on their hacks once I have checked it out, even if I decide later that the hack doesn't suit my needs anymore. I think that alot of folks feel this way since I see this sentiment (regarding not clicking uninstall) expressed by many other people, including top mods here. I think it would only take a small bit of coding to add a checkbox, and that would satisfy a lot of people who would like this feature as well.

Well, if the majority of the community upgraded to vB3 and thus do not use the vB2 hacks anymore, that would basically be a slap in the face for all the hard work put in to the vB2 hacks...

But there's the dual meaning of 'installed'
e.g.
I have got these hacks currently installed.
vs
I have installed these hacks in the past, they're pretty good.
If you want to insist on the current situation being adaquate, the ambiguity should be resolved by renaming it to 'currently installed hacks'
Personally, I'd like a 'currently installed' AND 'previously installed' options as mentioned previously.

Along the same lines I seriously doubt that 1500 people still have Chen's vb 2.2.X "Quick Reply" hack installed, or for that matter I seriously doubt that "vBIndex" has 859 CURRENT installs, so it seems that many other people here must feel the same way about not clicking uninstall.

>> Actually Installed
>> Total of Installs
this would be the BEST statistic possible for this request... and i've stated that long time ago... it's soooooo simple to add a count of active installs... it's the kind of things that make things more precise!

Hmm, seems like I got a different understanding of "Installed" as the majority then.
OK, adding "Please only click Install if you actually have installed/are using this Hack, and click Uninstall when you don't use it any longer" to my Relases.

as part of all distribution systems, we usually only see: "number of downloads"
... adding the "installed" button is for me a complement, not really useful... but to expand the stats to what it means, adding for future versions the "actually installed" thing would be good, but the download count is more interesting...

I think that the current method is very confusing, since they obviously use the "installed" stats to compile data about the most popular hacks, etc., so when a newbie logs in to the vb.org home page, and sees the side boxes listing the "most popular" hacks, it is actually misleading. The stats do not reflect the current direction/flow/attitude of things, and someone who installs their first hacks based on what is listed as being "popular" will be disappointed at the lack of support or compatibility with the current releases of vbulletin for many of those hacks.

I will use the "install" option for a couple of reasons. If I install something on the test bed, it doesn't mean it's going to end up on the live site. But yet, I may have plans on using the plugin in the future as it matures. So I'll definitely use the "install" button to be notified of new releases so I know when something has been updated.
I solved this problem for myself by clicking "install" on hacks that i have downloaded and tested out or made use of for a period of time.
For all of the hacks that i currently have installed on a live site I have subscribed to the Hack's thread so that it appears in my list of subscribed threads.
I like hitting install so that I can get notices when something is updated, approved, or someone finds a security leak
That is my $.02 anyway

i've seen so much times a comment like:
" not installed, but i click install because the coder deserves it"
i think that the actual Installed feature is not a "THANKS" button, and have no mean to be used to applause the coder's work... a simple thanks in the thread is enough for me...

Funny someone else should mention this .. I posted this less than 2 week ago about the exact same thing .... It deffo needs a change ..
Personally I don`t think the hack needs modifying .... But a thankyou hack for the praise of coders installing ....
