Can any please explain in Newbie terms how one would go about modifying the
Background color in a style to include a picture?

Also the sub-background (on defualt its the white background) behind the forums. Can you explain how commands used etc to add an Image there I would like to add a slightly Transparent image behind the forums..

There are two style settings in the Styles and templates section of the admin cp for each of your styles.

One is the page background and the other is the Body background.

Just make your changes there.
