Ok I have some suggestions to improve smilies and I realy would love to see someone making this as plugin/hack.

Smilies are not that important but they make posting so much more fun if you have cool ones.

1) Adding Smilie Pathes. Like every other image folder the path should be assignable via the style set so that different styles can use different smiles

2) Favorite Smilies. Let the user choose wich smilies he wants to see when he posts a message/reply in the smilie box. Maybe something like inline moderation so that every smilie gets it checkbox and below the list is a drop down "make selected favorites"

3) Favorite BIG Smilie List. Let the user choose wich smilies he wants to see when he clicks on the [more...] link. My Forum has lots of smilies and I for myself don?t even use half of them but every time I want to look for a smilie I have to wait till all the hundrets of smilies have been loaded.
Make it something like an Inline moderation option with checkboxes next to every smilie and a button "Only display those smilies". There could be a link at the bottom "Display all" and "Revert to standart". Could be an Admin option to turn this on/off if a forum doesn?t have much smilies

4) Inline Moderation for mass smilie move between categories

5) Pointing out replacement conflicts. I have so many smilies that I simply use the name (automated mass add) as replacement text for my smilies. This brings the problem if smilie names start with an O or P for example cause then it would look like :party_smilie:
So instead of replacing the whole text with the wanted smilie another one is used because the first two signs are the replacement for another smilie. So it would be good if vB could tell you wich smilie replacement names have conflicts. OR replacements would only consider whole "words" and not replace parts of a word as well

6) Usergroup based smilie Category use. It could be an optional usergroup setting for the admin to assign different smilie categories (and all the smilies in it of course ) to certain usergroups. This way users could be rewared with ne smilies or new users could be limited to only the defauld and such

These are just some Ideas that I think would greatly improve smilie usage.
If you have more smilie suggestions you can post them here as well.

Is anyone up for working on one or more of these suggestions?

I prefer the tern "Emoticon" or, "Emotion Icon"... THAT makes them sound more important. ;)

Best advice I can give ya on the replacement text for smilies is

Your single letter ones like : P and : D and : O only use the capitals

then for your long ones use lowercase and make the name of the smilie gif 8 characters long

Then when you setup the replacement text just use : before and after the name.

Now you will no longer have duplicate smilies :)

5) Pointing out replacement conflicts. I have so many smilies that I simply use the name (automated mass add) as replacement text for my smilies. This brings the problem if smilie names start with an O or P for example cause then it would look like arty_smilie:This is still an issue in 3.5?

Thought it would have been fixed by now.
